Fall Ball marked Connecticut College’s first big, campus-wide event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it was fun to dress up, take photos, and get down on the dance floor with friends, we were all a bit disappointed with the song selection for our first “big night out” in almost two years. Here are some songs we think should have been played at Fall Ball:
- While there are countless songs I wish I would have heard last Saturday night, there are two in particular that come to mind. To take a more metaphorical route, I would have loved to hear “After The Storm” by Kali Uchis. This song would have paid homage to not being able to have events like Fall Ball last year and how we are getting back to the norm. At one point in the song she writes, “The sun’ll come out/Nothing good ever comes easy.” This line feels representative of how gratifying it was to be surrounded by my fellow camels. The second song I would have been delighted to hear is “Yeah!” by Usher. No further explanation needed. – Hannah Zevon ‘24
- There are many songs that I wish had been played at Fall Ball, but one that I feel like should’ve been played is “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift, because any dance or party deserves to have Taylor Swift playing! Another song that would have been great is “Time Of Our Lives” / “Give Me Everything” by Pitbull & NeYo, because they’re some of the most fun throwbacks of our generation. – Lucie Bernheim ‘24
- Fall Ball reminded me of middle school dances in all of the best ways! I miss the random fun songs of my middle school era that had specific dances to go along with them, so I wished they had played more songs like “Gangnam Style” and “Cupid Shuffle!”– Kendall Foley ‘24
- Fall Ball was the perfect opportunity for musically suppressed Conn students to leave it all out on the dance floor. Instead, the only thing left on the dance floor was the questionable dance music. While I love a good ol’ tribute to “Cotton Eye Joe,” I would’ve loved to hear “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals—a virality right now. I was also waiting for any and all of One Directions’ hits to be played. However, the most wasted opportunity was not playing the Jonas Brothers cover of “Year 3000.” Although it was a valiant effort at a set list and I applaud their choices, these are the lingering thoughts that have weighed upon my heart ever since Fall Ball. Until next year, I will play these on loop in my brain to make up for the lost time on the dance floor. – Meredith Harper ‘24
- I often like to say that my music taste is “anything that I can dance to.” Pretty broad, right? Surprisingly, at Fall Ball last weekend, only about five songs hit that mark. While the jumping slightly off-beat was fun, I didn’t feel like I could adequately get down on the dance floor. I would have loved to hear some standards, like “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé, “Baby” by Justin Bieber, or at least something from my queen Britney Spears. Additionally, there weren’t many songs that I would classify as “pop,” and I would have personally thrown some Dua Lipa and Lil Nas X into the mix. Well… there’s always next year. – Lara Beckius ‘24
