One of my favorite things to do in the fall is to curl up under a cozy blanket with a cup of tea or coffee and read a good book. I especially love to read books that get me in the fall mood, whether that be cozy or spooky or nostalgic. Here are some of my favorite books to read in the fall. I hope you find some suggestions to add to your fall reading list!

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell

This is a graphic novel that follows two best friends, Josiah and Deja, who work together at a pumpkin patch. It is their last year in high school and last shift ever because next year they will both be in college, creating a nostalgic tone in the otherwise lighthearted story. We follow Josiah and Deja as they explore the pumpkin patch in search of Josiah’s crush. Along the way, they grab fall treats from each vendor, and we witness their adorable friendship. The art style by Faith Erin Hicks is very cute and adds to the fall vibes of the story. If you are too busy for a full novel, but still want to read something that is the epitome of fall, Pumpkinheads is the just read for you!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

Historical fiction novels are very cozy and remind me of the fall. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is one of the most charming and heartwarming, yet dramatic, historical fiction novels I have read. It is a fairly short book with 291 pages, but there is so much depth, in both the characters and historical context, that adds significance to the story. Our main character is an author, Juliet, who visits Guernsey after corresponding with a man on the island who discovered her address in a Charles Lamb book. The story, told through letters, explores the German occupation of this small island during World War II. If you are a fan of historical fiction and enjoy reading about characters who also love to read, then I recommend picking up this cozy read. (Also, the movie is on Netflix starring Lily James, which would be perfect to watch after reading the book!)

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

This is a young adult novel that takes place in England at the time of the Jack the Ripper murders. It follows a 17-year-old girl, Audrey, who practices forensic medicine in secret. At a time when girls were not involved in medicine, Audrey defies societal expectations, and while doing so, is led into the investigation of the mysterious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. This fictional novel is based on true events, with added drama and even a bit of romance. Stalking Jack the Ripper is the perfect novel to get you ready for the spooky season!

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

I am sure many people have either read or heard of this famous mystery novel by the queen of murder mysteries, Agatha Christie. Ten strangers with obscure pasts were all mysteriously invited to a private island. On the island, confusion erupts when the host who invited them fails to show up. As time progresses, one by one, the characters are killed, and we learn about their shady pasts. This mystery has many twists and turns and no matter how hard you try to solve the mystery, I guarantee you will be shocked by the ending.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

The entire Harry Potter series, and especially the first novel, reminds me of the cozy fall season.  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is such a nostalgic read for me that instantly makes me feel happy. The Halloween scenes are extra fun to read during the fall season, and I love reading the detailed descriptions of the decorations and festive treats. The new illustrated editions contain beautiful illustrations that perfectly capture the whimsy and magic of the story, making for an extra special read that would be perfect during the fall.

Happy reading!
