Anyone who has been at Conn, even for a short period of time, knows that its dining halls aren’t exactly worthy of 3 Michelin stars. But then again, what college food is? Just because Harris does not have the best reputation doesn’t mean that we haven’t figured out some tricks to appetizing food along the way.

So, here’s everything you need to know about food at Conn.

Make-Your-Own Sandwiches

One thing I think Conn’s dining halls do well, in a pandemic or not, is have individual sandwich components available so that students can use ciabatta rolls or whole wheat bread to make a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or a turkey and provolone cheese sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and humus. That being said, my favorite JA sandwich is the mediterranean veggie wrap, which comes with hummus and sliced veggies. Although it’s basic, I find that this combo (despite being soggy at times) hits the spot for a quick and easy lunch. On the flipside, the other vegetarian sandwich option with cooked vegetables is underwhelming as there are only a few sauteed veggies plopped onto two slices of whole wheat bread with no cheese or spread to accompany the vegetables. Regardless, I am very grateful for all that the dining staff at each location is doing to prepare meals for the student body. – Elizabeth Berry ‘21

Poke Bowls

Before the pandemic hit, Harris really started to amp up their offerings last academic year. There was sushi, the pizza oven, a different made-to-order entrees every evening, and my personal favorite, were the poke bowls. I’m so glad they still offer poke bowls in carry-out format. I enjoy these because, compared to the other items not in the hot line, the poke bowls (1) are more filling, and (2), hold up better after a couple of days, so I can stock up. – Samantha Barth ‘21

The Grill

Now this is a pre-pandemic luxury but the grill was heaven whenever the menu at the dining hall wasn’t appetizing. My friend created the perfect sandwich: cinnamon raisin bread with two pieces of salami and 2 eggs toasted on the grill. I was skeptical at first, but it’s amazing. Especially with fries. I always complained about the food, but now with the pandemic version, I miss the good ole days. – Elyce Afrifa ‘22

Hash Browns

With online morning classes, it takes a lot to get me out of bed and down to Harris while they’re serving breakfast. But the second I see shredded hash browns on the menu, you can bet I am heading down. They are seasoned perfectly and make a great side dish no matter what else is being served for breakfast. And, an added bonus: they’re vegan! On days when you’re tired of the same old cereal or oatmeal, I definitely recommend grabbing some hash browns.  – Caitlin Boyd ‘24
