A Grassroots Campaign to Maintain the Travel Mugs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

We all know and love the recently implemented mug share program brought to Connecticut college by the Student Government Association (SGA). The system, which theoretically works in accordance with the honor system, operates on the idea that students take travel mugs from Harris and the other dining halls and then return them to any dining hall when they are finished, to be washed and reused. Conn students compliant with honor code responsibilities usually, but since the genesis of the program a few weeks ago we have been struggling with our mug return rate.

Ted Steinberg, president of the class of 2016, recently released a public service announcement through the SGA facebook page-imploring students to return their mugs. Her Campus caught up with Ted to find out more about what necessitated his call to action, and how the future of the mug share program is looking right now.

What is your involvement with the mug program?
I saw the project had success at Bates, so when it was proposed I tried to be an advocate in any way possible.

What were the issues that brought about the PSA you put out on facebook?
We received a report stating the program was failing because the mug return rate was poor. If it continues on the pace it was on, the mugs will be taken away. This was a good way for us to let people know the issues with the program.

Has the PSA been effective? What responses have you received?
I think it has been effective. I’ve had people show me pictures of bags of mugs they are returning. I think people like the mugs and want to see their presence continue. It’s also started some discussion about our student government and further attempts to reach out to the whole campus. I plan on doing a couple more on the mugs and other campus issues.

What are your expectations for the success of the mug program? What feedback have you received so far?
I have received great feedback so far. People like the mugs, they’re convenient, light, portable, environmentally responsible and stylish too. We’ve also talked about ways to improve the experience of returning the mugs to make it easier.

Are you thinking of any other ways to enforce or solve the issues that brought about the need for the PSA?
We’re researching some ways to improve the system. Maybe bins in different buildings? Possibilities are endless and we’re always open to more suggestions. The best ideas we get are from discussions and feedback with the community.
