Campus Celebrity: Leah Shapiro

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Conn Coll chapter.

Meet Leah, this week’s Campus Celebrity! She is a talented and bubbly member of the class of 2016. You may have seen her this past weekend as Lucy in On the Town or on stage at an acapella show, so you already know she is mega-talented! We give you the scoop on the girl we love on and off stage: Leah Shapiro!

Name: Leah Shapiro (pronounced: Lay-uh, yeah, like the princess)

Major: Theatre and Human Development

Hometown: Baltimore, MD

Class year: 2016

Activities on campus? Shwiffs, Tour Guide, Volunteer at BP Learning

Tell us about your experience in On the Town!

On The Town has been such an amazing and rewarding experience. This is the first time in 39 years that the Theater Department is putting on a show in Palmer Auditorium… SO you could say it is a big deal. I have absolutely loved working under the direction of Professor Virginia (Ginny) Anderson. She is just so creative and inspiring and her take and adaptation of On The Town is really unique and beautiful.

How was working with the cast this season?

The cast is always one of my favorite parts about being in shows. When people are in shows together, they automatically form a bond and closeness. Everyone in the cast has been so supportive and 100% focused on making this the best show ever.

Are you in any upcoming shows?

I am! Right after On The Town finishes, I will start rehearsals for a Wig and Candle show (our student run theater group), Almost Maine. I’m really excited for this because it is a straight play (not a musical) and I have really wanted to be in something besides a musical for a while now.

What are your favorite preshow rituals?

If I told you, I’d have to kill you. Theater kids honor.

We know you are also part of the all-women acapella groups on campus. Tell us about being part of the Shwiffs.

I looooove being in the Shwiffs. It’s just such a nice and constant thing to always have in my weekly schedule. It’s a great group of girls who I love spending time and singing with. We’re actually singing at a Red Sox game (against the Orioles! Go O’s!!!) On April 19th and we’re all extremely psyched for that!

Will you be studying abroad?

Yes, I am! I actually just found out that I will be going to Copenhagen next fall and I absolutely cannot wait!

Favorite food? Pineapple

Nickname? People call me Lay, but you often hear me referred to as The Nugget.

Favorite musical? Les Misérables

Favorite Netflix binge show? Dawson’s Creek

Celeb girl crush? Sophia Bush

Fanning or Blaustein? Blaustein

Singing or acting? Singing

If you didn’t catch her in On the Town, don’t miss Leah’s performance in Almost Maine this April!
