After weeks of kicking back, relaxing, and savoring the not so warm days of spring vacation, it can often be a challenge to get back into the academic mindset. Although it’s wonderful to be back on campus reunited with friends and loved ones, readjusting to the the daily grind of coursework and extracurricular commitments is not always the easiest transition. In order to conquer the post-break slump, here are some tips to get out of your room and back into business for the rest of the semester!

1. Work in a new space. Whether it be our wonderful new Shain Library, a classroom in New London Hall or even a quiet spot in Cro, finding a new spot to study may help to clear your head so you can begin to work productively. Make sure the spot is quiet enough for you to fully focus and is free of distractions!

2. Begin with the easy stuff. Sometimes writing a challenging paper or studying for a lengthy exam can feel like unconquerable tasks. However, if you start with a briefer assignment (perhaps in a preferred subject area), it’ll be much easier to ease your way into the more difficult material.

3. Study in chunks and commit. The worst moment in studying is when the minute you get in the zone it’s time to leave. The academic resource center here at Conn recommends allocating 2-4 hour periods with breaks in between dedicated strictly to work. These generous allows of time will allow you to get in the zone and stay there in order to accomplish the week’s upcoming work.

4. Stay organized. In the process of returning to school, it can often be difficult to stay in the swing of things and keep track of your schedule. Make sure to record all your assignments, appointments and meetings so you can stay on top of everything and avoid becoming overwhelmed or swamped in a flow of work all at once.

5. Be happy! College can certainly be stressful at times, but it is also has the potential to be incredibly rewarding and fun. Enjoy the classes you’re studying for and take time to remind yourself of why you are here. You are surrounded by people who love you and have opportunities available everyday. Make this semester count and enjoy it!
