Are you the type of person who loves making playlists or mixtapes? Or maybe you just love to be the recipient of such compilations? Either way, 8tracks.com is the perfect place to find new music and revisit old favorites.

The website gives anyone the opportunity to make mixes and publish them for others to find using key words that describe the mix. For whatever mood you’re in, 8tracks has a playlist to satisfy your needs. Categories range from hip hop, indie rock, R&B, and classical to study, party, dubstep, chill, workout, and acoustic mixes.

The website is frequently presented on the “music” interest on stumbleupon.com and if you choose to publish your mixes you can make them accessible to stumblers everywhere.

When you make an account with 8tracks, you have the opportunity to follow other users whose music taste is similar to yours. You can also “like” mixes, which makes them easier to find in the future and even “favorite” tracks to make them accessible as well. Unlike following someone on Twitter, updates are only presented when he/she makes a new mix.

It is interesting to see what playlists land on the “Hot” list of most popular mixes because the listening is based on mood. Personally I have found that making 8tracks playlists can be very rewarding because your playlist of personal favorites may turn out to be a favorite of someone else. Not only is it nice to know other people share your interests, but it is also rewarding to see comments on the playlists knowing you are making someone happy. Unlike Facebook and Twitter, the members of 8tracks aren’t looking to make friends but simply share the love of music!

For an idea, check out my 8tracks playlist “Today will be a good day” http://8tracks.com/b_weiss/today-will-be-a-good-day and see for yourself! Hopefully it will make you want to dance around your room.
