It’s the beginning of a new school year which means it’s time to whip out our new outfits, pencils and notebooks. The beginning of a semester is also a great time to make new friends. Some faces on campus are fresh and some are old, but either way who isn’t looking for a new buddy?! We are all about being inclusive and always looking for opportunities to make new friends.
Keep our 5 ways to make new friends in mind the next time you are wandering campus, and you’ll be sure to end up with a new lunch buddy, coffee date or even a new BFF!
1. Coffee houses around campus
Among Coffee Grounds, Blue Camel, Coffee Closet and coming soon the Walk-in Closet/Ruane’s Den, you are bound to meet someone you kind of, sort of, maybe know and always wanted to get to know. Whether that’s the case or it’s a complete stranger, throw out a simple “Hey” or even “What’s your favorite drink here?” while waiting on line. Everyone loves to drink coffee as much as they love to talk about it.
2. Clubs(!!!)
It has been said before, BUT we’ll say it again, clubs are a great way to meet new people and make friends outside of your everyday social circle. There are so many great clubs (like Her Campus!) that get you involved and active on campus.
3. House fellows and floor governors are friends not food!
Don’t be shy to reach out to them in your dorm. They are here to help, make you comfortable, safe and, yes, even be your friend. Get other friends from your dorm to stop by your house fellow’s suite to chat and get to know one another. Word from the wise… they probably have snacks.
4. The panini machines
Who likes standing aimlessly around the panini machines right next to a fellow panini maker in absolute silence? Next time you are waiting for your genius creation to toast to perfection, strike up a conversation with the camel standing next to you. You never know, the two of you may bond over a sandwich creation and win the next season of Top Chef.
5. Strike up a conversation with someone in the mailroom
Friendships do not always have to develop in conventional settings. The mailroom is always packed and bound to have a long line during this time of year. So, next time you’re waiting to hand in your slip to get your textbook from Amazon, reach out and say hi to the person in line next to you. In the words of Nike, just…say hi.
