New To The City? How to Dress Like a True Montréalaise

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Concordia CA chapter.

Montreal is known in Canada for its mad street style, so if you’re an out-of-towner like me, you may be a little intimidated by how effortlessly flawless Montreal women look, like, all the time.

Here are some simple tricks I’ve picked up to fit in and keep up with this amazing city.

1. You Need A Killer Coat….Or Two

One sure way to always look on point is to make sure you have classy stylish fall and winter coats.

For winter, I go with a long black wool coat. Pair it with a cute scarf and hat, and you’ve got yourself a look that is eternally cute, with little effort. In the fall I wear a beige trench coat, because it can be easily dressed up or down and is classically chic.

2. You Need Ankle Boots

These versatile shoes are perfect for every season, and are one of this year’s most popular trends. Make any lazy-girl outfit seem instantly dressed up by adding a pair of these booties to the look.

3. You Need More Black

Black on black on black on black. Monochrome is always in style here. Do you think you’re wearing too much black? Don’t worry, you look great. I made the mistake of wearing too much colour and sticking out at parties more than any first year wants to. Black is going to be your new BFF.

4. You Need Something Vintage

Usually, it’s faux vintage picked up at Urban Outfitters but never the less, vintage-inspired clothes have always been Montreal’s thing. Keep up with the looks by splurging at a trendy store on Saint Catherine’s or hit up some of the Plateau’s many thrift shops!

5. You Need to Be You!

Living in Canada’s most fashionable city gives you the freedom to dress however you want. Be who you are, dress how you want- that’s the beauty of the city we live in!
