Montreal’s Ice Cream Scene

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Concordia CA chapter.

This summer I did some digging around to find good ice cream places in town. By good, I mean both delicious and Instagram-worthy of course. Despite the school year starting, it’s not too late to have a taste—especially to cheer you up before things get hectic.

So far on my “quest” for ice cream I found these three shops, but trust me, there are so many more that I’ll find my way to in Montreal!

Mlle Catherine—Old Montreal

This cute, little shop stands among the various restaurants in Place St. Jacques in the heart of the Old Port. The cork map on their wall represents the many tourists that have stopped by for their dipped ice cream. An old fashioned bicycle and flower pots decorate the small terrace, making it the perfect hang out spot.

They have the regular soft ice cream flavours (vanilla and chocolate) with a few choices of dips. The Ferrero Roche dip was delicious, but it melts quickly and gets messy.

La Diperie

If you love dipped, soft ice cream, and have adventurous taste buds, this is your spot. La Dip. can be found around Montreal, from Plateau Mont-Royal, to NDG, to Mile-Ex. You’ll probably notice it from afar due to the lineup it attracts. With an abundance of flavours like cheesecake, classic dark chocolate, and matcha, there’s something for everyone.

I personally thought the cheesecake dip was too sweet, but again, you have choices!

Ca Lem—NDG

For you fellow Loyola students, this is the place to go for great ice cream on your breaks. The quirky shop is just off campus on Sherbrooke Street. You probably spotted the neon Post-Its wall as the background of ice cream pictures on many Instagram posts. Ca Lem offers 18 exotic flavours such as mango, lychee, and Vietnamese coffee among others. Every week they come up with a new combination.

When I went, the week’s special was mango/chocolate. It was amazing!

As I said, there are many other places around Montreal. Some notable mentions that we need to try are Kem CoBa, le Blueboy, and Chocolate Favoris. Have fun tasting Montreal’s ice cream before it melts!

Writing has been her passion for as long as she can remember, and is the reason why she's been pursuing it throughout her University career. She has been working on a novel-length story since high school that she hopes to one day publish. Journalism pricked her interest in her last year of high school when she took an optional class. Amanda joined a group in class, and they had to make a plan for a contest on how they would document the humanitarian work in Peru. They won first place, and had the chance of traveling to a small community in Peru where they had the chance to interview and meet volunteers and citizens. It was at that moment that Amanda knew what she wanted to do in life.
