Confessions of a Short Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Concordia CA chapter.

Whether it’s struggling to reach something from the top shelf, always losing your friends in a big crowd or constantly having people question your age, being a short girl has it’s ups and downs. Luckily, I am not the only one who has struggled in awkward situations before due to my height! Here’s a look at a few of the struggles and awkward situations short girls at Concordia have encountered.

“When my friends are in flats, I have to wear my highest heels only to still be shorter than all of them. And people always think I’m much younger than I am; when I go to a new hairdresser and they ask me if I’m changing my hair for prom coming up…. but prom was 4 years ago.”

“When I went to Cage aux Sports last year, I wanted to order a drink, but before I had a chance to ask for the drink menu, the waiter brought me crayons.”

-Short girl Liz, 5’0”

“My dad made me a custom step ladder that we keep in the kitchen so I can reach the plates.”

-Short girl Alessia, 5’0”

“I was in Europe and everyone was crowded around some guy but I couldn’t see who it was. So I turned to this six-foot-five dude next to me and asked who everyone was staring at. He put me on his shoulders so that I could see for myself, and it turned out to be Kit Harington. I can’t believe I almost missed Jon Snow because of my height!”

-Short girl Jill, 5’1”

“When I was 16, I got carded at the movies for a PG13 movie because I looked younger. I am now 22, and instead of getting carded in the movies, I am constantly get carded when I go out to bars.”

-Short girl Helena, 5’3”

“All of my friends use me as an armrest when they need something to lean on.”

-Short girl D’Anté, 5’3”

“Once in the grocery store, I wanted something from the top shelf but was alone. So I positioned my cart and climbed inside it, and clearly, since I’m super graceful, I ended up slipping. The cart slid out and I went flying directly for the shelf—while all the soup cans came tumbling down with me.”

-Short girl Hailey, 5’2.5”

“Once at work, I couldn’t reach the highest shoe display, and so when a customer took down a shoe from the very top and handed it to me, I tried to put it back up but the shoe ended up falling on my face. Meanwhile the customer was watching this whole thing happen!”

-Short girl Alexa, 5’4”
