Canadian-Style Winter Fun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Concordia CA chapter.

The days are shorter, the weather is colder, and all we want to do is stay at home under the covers. When we’re in the warmth of our home, it’s hard to make ourselves get out of bed, suit up, and venture out in the cold.

These are some activities perfect for a day out with friends, or even for a cute date, that will motivate you to go out! If you’re an exchange student, this is your chance to experience Canada at its finest. If you’re a local, this can bring back childhood memories, or even make you experience something you might have missed out.

  1. Rideau Canal, Ottawa

The Rideau Canal becomes a skating rink in winter, making it the largest skating rink in the world according to its website. What better way to visit Ottawa than to skate around the city? Night or day, it’s the perfect place for skating.

  1. Winter Carnival—Quebec City

From Jan. 26 to Feb. 11, 2018 you’ll have to chance to explore beautiful Quebec City as it becomes a winter wonderland. You have it all from fun games in the snow, to food and hot cocoa. There’s something for everyone!

  1. Montreal en Lumière

If you don’t want or can’t leave the city, Montreal never disappoints with its events. Montreal en Lumière will be from Feb. 22 to March 4, 2018. Places des Spectacles will be transformed again this winter for its 19th edition of the festival. With food, hot drinks, activities, and concert, anyone can find their little niche at this event!

These are just three potential winter activities for you and your friends, or you and your partner. Whether it’s a romantic tour of Ottawa on skates, or a fun day in a winter wonderland, our Canadian winter will not lock you up in your home!

Amanda is a Journalism and Creative Writing major at Concordia University in Montreal. Writing has been her passion for as long as she can remember, and is the reason why she's been pursuing it throughout her University career. She has been working on a novel-length story since high school that she hopes to one day publish. Journalism pricked her interest in her last year of high school when she took an optional class. Amanda joined a group in class, and they had to make a plan for a contest on how they would document the humanitarian work in Peru. They won first place, and had the chance of traveling to a small community in Peru where they had the chance to interview and meet volunteers and citizens. It was at that moment that Amanda knew what she wanted to do in life.
