The Struggles of Traveling Home for Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Chicago chapter.

Preparing to travel home for the holidays is always a stressful time. Thanksgiving, in particular, is always a mess since everyone is trying to get home and then swiftly back by Monday for school or work.

However, the stressors that come with traveling home pale in comparison to the joy of spending some much needed time with the fam. But we still can’t deny the struggles. So without further ado let’s reminisce and prepare ourselves to face them once again.

We all know packing is the absolute worst. There’s the under packers and the over packers and finding a happy medium is seemingly impossible. I think we can all agree the struggle is real on this one.

So, how’s school? Any special someone’s? You’re working, right? Are ya working hard or hardly working? You have to love the endless obnoxious strain of questions from your older relatives that you never want to answer. Can’t a girl eat her turkey in peace?

Ah public transportation the highlight of everyone’s life, am I right ladies? Nothing better than being overcrowded by angry holiday travelers.

No, ma’am, I don’t want to listen to your life story, kindly allow me to listen to my headphone in peace.

Why does traveling take so long? I swear this was only a four-hour trip, why has it felt like an actual eternity? I’m trapped.

I promise it’s not going to take off with you still on it lady. Just chill, your bag will still be there.

“Mom, where are you parked?” “No, I told you I got in at six, not eight!”

While you just want to enjoy the familiar scenery and decompress from the days travels, your parents have another idea. Please, guys,  I cannot recap my entire semester so far right here in the car.

It’s finally Thanksgiving and you couldn’t be more excited for the treats to come. Spending time with your family and stuffing your face, what’s better than that?

At the end of the day, you wouldn’t trade the painful trip and embarrassing question from you aunt for anything. I promise in 20 years you’ll look back and smile.
