Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Chicago chapter.

Not to be dramatic, but I got to see Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse early and I’m beyond excited for everyone else to see it (and to see it again myself.). I was even more delighted when I found out it’s been nominated for a Golden Globe for best animated movie of the year, which I’m certain it’s going to win.

I shouldn’t have to convince you to go see this, but here’s my spoiler free attempt.

1. It’s a movie that’s meant to be for kids. Don’t sign it off as a dumb movie for that, that simply means it’s not going to be confusing if you don’t know anything about Spider-man in general. It’s easy to follow.

2. The animation style. The first time I watched the trailer, I knew that it was going to look awesome. It’s unlike any other animated movie I’ve seen, mixing different types of art styles together with the exciting coloring choices followed by cool editing techniques this movie really takes the cake. The entire film is gorgeous and it really helps add to the emotion of the film.

3. It’s funny. I laughed so hard, out loud, this whole film. Laughing like that would’ve been obnoxious if I wasn’t in a pre-screening where everyone was reacting like that. There’s multiple laugh out loud moments and I think you’ll find yourself loving Miles’ characters.

4. It has a touching story. The story highlights on a boy struggling to fit in, something we can all relate to. It touches on family issues as well and Miles’ really wants to embrace his new abilities but his roadblocks along the way. He isn’t discouraged though, he just needs time to learn and in the end, he delivers a message to the audience that really touched my heart.

5. It has an awesome cast. Yes, that is Jake Johnson playing the coolest role of his life, yes that is John Mulaney, Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld, Nicholas Cage, Chris Pine, and they even got Mahershala Ali. Everyone does an incredible job adding depth to their characters and giving great performances.

I’m going to stop my list there because I’ll go on for a while. Seriously go check Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse as soon as it comes out, it’s an amazing film. It will be in theaters December 14th!
