Do you ever find yourself listening to your favorite radio station and wonder who the disc jockey you’re listening to is? Well, if you’re wondering who Columbia’s go-to gal for all the latest radio gossip and drama about musicians and the like is, then look no further.
Senior radio major Demi Lobo—you heard right, that is her real name—always knew she had a passion for music and radio ever since she attended grammar school and started performing in talent shows. Born in California but raised in Chicago, Lobo—also known as the “The Pop Princess of Chicago”—has been branded the “Drama Queen,” according to DemiLobo.com, because of the high response of her first song titled “Drama Queen.”
Lobo transferred to Columbia her sophomore year from Eastern Illinois University because she “felt it was time for growth” and wanted to “so bad.” Her main interests include radio and music of course, and she says they always ran hand in hand for her. According to DemiLobo.com, her favorite motto is “Reach for the moon and if you fall short, you will land somewhere amongst the stars.” This star has officially land at Her Campus Columbia!
Jackson Thomas: How did you first hear about Columbia College Chicago?
Demi Lobo: Eastern Illinois [University] is in a small town in Charletson, Ill., so in an attempt to get on a larger radio station and also be able to perform before more people, the radio program at Columbia popped up in my search. I knew Columbia was the school for me where I could study music, get more exposure and perform for larger crowds at the same time.
JT: What made you want to attend Columbia?
DL: When doing my research, I felt the radio program at Columbia was more concentrated and had more to offer than the electronic media production program I was previously studying for.
JT: Can you tell me why you chose radio as your major? What makes you passionate about this program, and why are you passionate about it?
DL: The radio program is the best program ever! My teachers really prepared me for the real world! I am an on-air radio personality here in Chicago on 107.5 WGCI. When I started at WGCI as an intern, there were so many things I already knew about radio because of Columbia. The Radio Department and teachers are in the field of study, and that really helps you get a better understanding of what you should expect as you face the real world. IÂ am passionate about this program because they are so supportive and have always been.
JT: What was the defining factor that made you realize Columbia was the school for you?
DL: When I came to Open House I learned about Big Mouth, which is our big talent show that hundreds of people go to. I knew I was in love. Also, that our school station WCRX was one of the best college-run radio stations.
JT: What are you most looking forward to when you receive your degree from Columbia?
DL: This is my last semester, so I am looking forward to graduation! School has been amazing and helped and prepared me in so many aspects in my life. I am ready to hit the real world and put my lessons to work! I am going to cry when I get my degree. Though I am already working at the No. 1 station for hip-hop and R&B in Chicago, it will be a symbol of validation for me.
JT: What’s next after Columbia? What is your dream job, and what would you like to do with your degree?
DL: After Columbia I plan to devote every minute into music and radio, more traveling during the week and applying for grad school. I do not have a dream job. I am an actress, a radio personality, a singer, I do it all. At the end of the day Demi Lobo is a brand.
