What is WBAR?
WBAR is Barnard College’s freeform radio station located in the basement of Reid. We are a community of over one hundred DJs broadcasting shows live 24 hours a day. We also book concerts each semester with our biggest show being the annual WBAR-BQ taking place each April on Lehman Lawn. Last year’s WBAR-BQ featured ten bands with The Crystal Ark and Real Estate as headliners.
What is your position at WBAR?
I am Personnel Director and for the past semester I have been General Manager of WBAR.
What is the best part of the job?
My favorite part of WBAR is how excited our DJs are about their shows. Every semester it seems that the DJs with early morning or late night time slots promote their shows the most and have the most listeners even though they have to wake up at 4am to be in the station. It’s great that we have DJs that want to spend time around the station even when they don’t have their shows. A college radio station should be a place where anyone can just stop by and listen to new music or share music that they have just discovered. When we have DJs hanging out in the office all the time it makes our little studio in the basement of feel like a home.
What is your favorite memory from work with WBAR?
Earlier this month we hosted our winter concert ,which we billed as “Goth Prom” and near the end of the show the WBAR staff crowned Josh Faber (WBAR’s Punk/Loud Music Director) and me as Goth Prom King and Queen. It was complete with spiked crowns but sadly no pig’s blood à la Carrie.
What else are you involved with on campus?
I am also an AV tech for Barnard AV which means I’m the girl hiding in the corner dressed in all black making sure your microphone works as you give your thesis presentation.
If you could meet one celebrity, who would it be?
PJ Harvey
What do you wish for this holiday season?
This holiday season I hope to see some sunshine when I’m home in California before I go abroad to face a Russian winter.
