When traveling beyond the Barnard gates…a little west to the University of Michigan, I was instantly struck by this great remix. As babies of the late 80s and early 90s, it seems like we’re always united by 90s classic jams.
On a rare, but excellent music night, Brit hits us more than one time, our lives are immediately spiced up by the Spice Girls, Mandy, Christina and LFO makes an appearance every other time with Sugar Ray and TLC. No matter how bad the current music on the radio seems in comparison, we have our solid tunes to fall back on.Â
Yes, you can choose to throw a 90s party as an excuse to play these songs, or just stick with a playlist of all the latest house music….but why make music sacrifices though? These two genres can co-exist! Enter…the remix. It’s like a guaranteed peace treaty when executed properly.Â
This weekend in Ann Arbor–at the school that for sure knows its party music—“Vamos a Los Levels” by The Friendly Giant played night after night. This song was a beautiful, and exotic music child– created by a 90s Latina mother: Loona and a blonde Swedish father: Avicii.
You don’t have to be in Spanish Intermediate II to sing the lyrics: “Vamos a La Playa” and you certainly don’t have to be in the clubs of Ibiza with the house legend to get on those “levels.” In fact, you don’t even need a real dance partner to rage to the song with. Thanksgiving is around the corner, party with that giant turkey!? I won’t be, but you’re welcome to!Â
This is “How We Do It” in 2011…check it out!Â
