Stuck in My Head: Ben Kweller

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Ben Kweller, child music prodigy and somewhat of a music-cult figure, is back at it again at 30 years old. His fifth album in his own name, Go Fly a Kite was released last month and is already making waves.

While one of the tracks on his new album, “Mean to Me” was a bit too intense and angry, I found one really terrific one,“Full Circle” which I have been playing on repeat all day long. It begins with a folksy a capella introduction which serves to immediately catch one’s attention. The song is light, whimsical and moreover one that would be good to jam out to with a a bunch of your friends. Get your guitar and start playing the chords.

The lyrics? There is also something endearing: give people chances because they’ll come back around, come full circle.

However, the greatest part of the song  is when Ben Kweller switches up the repetitive nature of the song to show off his vocal virtuosity. The woo’s.  There is something so intriguing and interesting about his vocal coloring. I would listen to the song just for that part:

“Promenade, wooo Brooklyn Heights to the Marfa lights
Open sky, wooo, lay me down let yer sweetness surround
Electricity ground, I just can’t believe how”

If you like this BK song, you will probably enjoy this one: “Magic.” It’s my second favorite as of now.

Later music-geeks!
