I don’t know about you, but with this freezing winter weather, all I want to do is forget about m y assignments, cuddle up with a blanket and binge watch a bunch of movies. If you’re anything like me and feeling lonely, craving something low stakes or just in the mood for a soft whimsical romance, rom-coms are the way to go. Say hello to gentle humor, down-bad main characters and slow-burn chemistry that feels like a heavy blanket. Here’s a list of nostalgic classics to modern favourites that guarantee butterflies in your belly.

  1. Notting Hill (1999)

Starring: Julia Roberts (Anna Scott) and Hugh Grant (William Thacker)

In this movie, William, a quiet British bookkeeper falls for Anna who’s a world famous actress. There’s witty banter, charming dialogues and the famous scene where Anna pleads with William to love her, “I’m also just a girl, standing in front of the boy, asking him to love me.”

Run time: 2h 4m

Available on: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Peacock

  1. Serendipity (2001)

Starring: Kate Beckinsale (Sara Thoman) and John Cusack (Jonathan Trager)

The story starts during a busy Christmas shopping season when Sara and Jonathan reach for the last pair of cashmere gloves at Bloomingdales. The meet-cute leads to them spending a magical evening together. Years later, both engaged to other people but unable to forget the night go on a search to find each other leading to near-misses throughout New York City.

Run time: 1h 30m

Available on: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV,  Hulu

  1. Two Weeks Notice (2002)

Starring: Sandra Bullock (Lucy Kelson) and Hugh Grant (George Wade)

Lucy, a brilliant lawyer unexpectedly became the right-hand woman to billionaire George Wade. While the arrangement starts professionally, over time he becomes overdependant leaving Lucy frustrated and exhausted. Lucy quits but while training her successor, she realizes her feelings for George have blossomed into something romantic. On the other hand, George realizes he can’t imagine life without her. This is one of those classic romantic comedies that’ll leave you giggling and blushing and is also my personal favourite.

Run time: 1h 41m

Available on: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

  1. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Starring: Kate Hudson (Andie Anderson) and Matthew McConaughey (Benjamin Barry)

The film centers on Andie, a journalist and Benjamin, an advertising executive who date each other with hidden agendas. Andie is writing an article on how to lose a guy in 10 days while Benjamin bets he can make a woman fall in love with him in the same time frame. This leads to some of the most chaotic and hilarious scenarios.

Run time: 1h 50m

Available on: Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max

  1. Sundays at Tiffany’s (2010)

Starring: Alyssa Milano (Jane Claremont) and Eric Winter (Michael Friend)

Sundays at Tiffany’s follows Jane who grew up overlooked by her incredibly successful and glamorous mother. Her only source of solace was an imaginary friend, Michael who disappeared on her tenth birthday. Fast forward, now an adult, Jane is engaged and running her family business when her imaginary friend reappears in human form. This film blends romance with an almost magical phenomenon.

Run time: 1h 40m

Available on: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

  1. A Christmas Prince (2017)

Starring: Rose McIver (Amber Moore) and Ben Lamb (Prince Richard)

Run time: 1h 32m

So whether you’re looking to sob into a pint of ice-cream or giggle with your girl friends, these are the perfect movies for both scenarios. Add them to your rotation for something warm and fluffy to end your day.
