SATC in Morningside Heights: If Samantha Were a Barnard Student

After seeing Charlotte and Miranda as Barnard College women, we turn next to Samantha.  Samantha embodies Barnard very much through her confidence, her genius ability to network and run her own PR business, and through her single-minded pursuit of that which makes her happy. Of course, not everyone agrees with Samantha’s sexual freedom, but she serves as a model for some who feel confined by the normal standards of love and dating. Where better than New York City to be your own person and focus on your own goals? Of course, it’s certainly easier when you’ve got a great set of friends to back you up. But what was Samantha like as an undergrad? Here’s my impression…

Samantha came to college not really knowing what she wanted to do with her life, but knowing that she’d figure out along the way. Coming from a working-class background, Samantha plans to work hard once she figures it out, but she’s in no rush. In the meantime, she’s certainly doing what makes her happy. School is easy when she gets it. She enjoys creative writing and dramatic literature, and avoids all classes on CULPA that are math or science related. 9 Ways of Knowing, what?! It’s obvious that while Samantha may have gotten into Barnard and is certainly intelligent, she is maybe not an A-student anymore. Sometimes she misses class in order to get her nails done at Golden Nail or to get pampered at Bliss midtown with the girls. A girl’s gotta look good!
Samantha lives for weekends here at CU, which are blessedly three days long. She spends her Fridays at her internship at a magazine like Glamour, learning how to style, write, and network on a truly professional level. On Saturdays, Samantha likes to attend the theater or go see a film at the Angelika. But at night, you can see her making that trek between 1020 and Cannon’s repeatedly, and always in four-inch Manolos she spent all her babysitting money on. She walks into the bar and is already the life of the party as lights bounce off her golden-blonde hair and her white teeth. Everyone is infatuated by Samantha’s trilling laugh and low voice. Everyone loves it when she says “Oh, honey…” She knows the bartenders, the bouncers, the busboys, the City college kids, and anyone would do a favor for her at the drop of a hat and a flash of that smile.

For Samantha, nights never end at the bars. College is where she first got her taste of a “try-sexual” life (I’ll try anything!), and New York City is definitely her playground. You can bet she has some male visitors coming back to her single in Hewitt…many, in fact. She is notorious among Barnard Security for signing in a fair number of Columbia guys. And who could forget her downtown club boys? When it comes to the big-shot Wall-street men, she finds her way back to their East Side apartments. While Samantha might “sleep around,” she is as discreet as possible when it comes to those dreadful walk-of-shames. She knows how to prepare for those nights out by making a little kit of essential items and flinging it into her Longchamp: a tee, jeans, and flats. Keeping it classy! She definitely knows how to take care of herself.
In regards to her interactions with other women, Samantha doesn’t make friends easily, and can sometimes come off as a little cold. She has a very carefully constructed façade that makes it hard to truly get to know the girl beyond the Chanel sunglasses. She is fiercely independent and is entirely comfortable spending hours, even days at a time alone. But if you are one of the lucky ones to garner her respect and her loyalty, you can be sure that you’ve got a real friend who will see you through the most difficult of times.
Samantha—a girl with vision, with style, with class. She knows how to turn some of life’s most awkward situations into a good story, and we all could take a page out of her book when it comes to confidence. She is a woman that we all can learn something from.

And next time, of course, we have Carrie. Whether you love her or can’t stand her, she is undeniably the focal point of the group. Take a look with us at what she might have been like, dashing around campus (for those of you who haven’t seen exactly that!).
