Last week, we gave you a snapshot of what we think our girl Charlotte from Sex and the City would be like if she was a student at Barnard today. Well, next on the list is none other than Miranda—a highly successful lawyer who finds herself blessed with a family she is not quite ready to take on. Indeed, many of us career-focused Barnard women may look to Miranda as a model of how to juggle everything and make it work so that you still have time to grab brunch with your best friends on the weekends. So, what would college-age Miranda be like? Read on to find out…
    Â
Miranda is the kind of girl who knows what she wants, knows how to get it, and won’t be shy about telling exactly how this is going to happen (even if the details are still a little bit fuzzy). She came to Barnard because she knows that the education she would receive here would give her the best tools for success and the most confidence to take her place in a male-dominated workplace one day. Her approach to life can be a little bit too strong for some people, but there is no doubt that her tenacity is admirable. And her friends know that she is the most loyal and steadfast of friends, and always means well even if she doesn’t come off that way.
In her tiny single room in Elliott (could you really see her getting along with a roommate?), there are stacks of exam prep books for the LSAT and the GRE, along with non-fiction books of various subjects (not to mention a tattered romance novel peeking out from under her bed, too). Her major is something serious, like PoliSci or Econ, but she also takes lots of courses in women’s studies. In class, Miranda frequently expresses her opinions on whatever is being discussed and won’t be afraid to get into a fight if anyone disagrees, even if it’s the professor. She is a member of the Athena Pre-Law Society, the Columbia Women’s Business Society, Women’s International Business Council, the Entrepreneurship Club, Take Back the Night…the list goes on. She’s a busy girl!
In terms of style, much of what Miranda wears is essentially what is comfortable, clean, and within reach when she rushes to get dressed in the morning. T-shirts with sassy slogans, jeans, leggings, sneakers, sweatshirts and headbands all formulate Miranda’s uniform. It’s not that she doesn’t know how to dress herself or doesn’t notice fashions, Miranda just doesn’t have the time to go shopping for herself or to make cute outfits. She surrounds herself with stylish friends, however, and manages to hold her own—she’s hard not to notice with that red hair! While most weekends she is holed up in Butler 310 with a very large coffee, she still makes time once in a while to get drinks with the girls.
Like many of us, Miranda is caught up in a world of work, meetings, deadlines, papers, and doesn’t have time for a boyfriend. If you ask her, she’ll tell you that she’s sure she’ll get married to an equally smart and driven man, and have a family one day, but that day is too far off for her to think about. Her confidence and self-assuredness is like armor, but for those who know how to get through to her (like a sweet, insistent bartender at Mel’s), she is somebody who you can depend on.

Miranda is a perfect reminder for those of us who are career-driven to live a little, take advantage of New York City, and skip an evening of studying for a night out with good friends. We only get to be in college for a short period of time, after all. In fact, next week we’ll turn to Samantha—no one else knows as well as she how to have a good time!
