Sunday, September 22, marked the first day of fall. Temperatures began to drop (for the most part…), and the autumn winds started to blow, bringing with them an unexpected chill, a craving for pumpkin spice lattes, and the need to break out our favorite fall staples. With temperatures fluctuating from 50 to 75 daily, however, women all over the city are facing the same dilemma— what can we wear?

There’s only one solution for smoothly transitioning into cold weather clothing: layers.

Layering is a great way to express your individual style, and keep you warm when you really need it. Remember: it’s not about piling on piece after piece. Try switching up the textures, patterns, and colors for a weather-ready look straight from the runways. Take tips from these Fall Fashion Week styles for an on-trend outfit.

Stay Comfy-Chic in Dresses and Knits

An alternative to the sweater dress, you can keep your favorite skirts and dresses around for another season by pairing them cozy knits. Perfect for those days that start cold but warm up later, it’s a simple fix that’s customizable to your personal style, because it’s easy to mix and match! Pair a neutral sweater with a patterned dress, or solid on solid for a color-blocked look. Play with the weights and textures of the fabrics, like cable knit with silk chiffon. The best part? This laid-back look can be dressed up with heels and statement jewelry, or down with a pair of boots and simple accessories.

Try a Monochromatic Look

The word “monochromatic” may have boring connotations, but when done right it has the opposite effect. Layering pieces in the same colors, especially dark or neutral ones, creates a chic, put-together ensemble that works whether you’re going to class, or going out on the town. The beauty of sticking to one color is that it gives the illusion of less layers, which means you feel slim and sexy instead of bulky, even when you’ve piled on the outerwear. Subtle and understated, this look is an elegant way to layer.

Go Bold With Striking Patterns

Layering different patterns and prints is an eye-catching way to stay warm this fall. Herringbone, plaid, and houndstooth are huge this season, and are easily matched with other fabrics when done in neutral colors, like black and white. Wearing a subtle print like pinstripes under a loud, graphic coat is also a great way to mix patterns – when the coat comes off, there’s still something interesting underneath. If the all-over pattern is too much for you, try pairing a sweater and blouse with pants in a graphic print.

Play with Texture

Mixing different textures is a great way to make layers pop, while staying warm in thick fabrics. Leather, tweed, and faux fur are perfect protection against the cold, plus they were all over the Fall Fashion Week runways. Pair leather leggings with a lace top and fur trimmed coat for a rocker vibe, or contrast a comfy knit sweater with a structured tweed coat. Playing with a variety of fabrics creates an engaging and unique ensemble; your layers will be anything but dull!
