On Tuesday April 23rd, Her Campus Barnard had the lucky opportunity to show a free screening of the powerful documentary, Girl Rising, at Columbia University. We partnered with Columbia’s Amnesty International, a student group with dozens of members who work to advance awareness about human rights issues on campus. Given that their main focus this year was education, the partnership was perfect.
With an abundance of delicious snacks (including sprinkled cookies and cupcakes), 15 Barnard and Columbia girls and guys gathered to watch this thought-provoking film. Their reactions ranged from laughters, to tears, to dropped jaws, to smiles. Without a doubt, every viewer, including me, who had already seen the film once before, left with a clear understanding of how special this movie is and how much work needs to be done to make our world a place everyone wants to live in.
Some of the viewers said:
“I worked for 10 by 10 while try we’re still making it so it was amazing to see the process materialized”
“It was really inspiring”
“Every woman at Barnard should see this film”
“I am so gratful I took two hours out of my studying to see a movie that makes me a better person and makes me want to change this world”
