How to Be the Best Dressed at Your Internship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

The moment is here- you finally land the internship of your dreams. After what feels like an eternity of writing cover letters, perfecting your resume, and attending numerous interviews, you at last secure an amazing internship. Not only will this new internship be an incredible learning experience, but it will also allow you to network professionally and develop unmatchable skills. Going to your first day on the job can be daunting- but having the perfect outfit can help calm those initial nerves! Whether you will be working in fashion, finance, a casual office, or really any other job, being professional yet comfortable is key. Here are some outfit ideas to help you achieve perfect professional style!

The Wall Streeter

Especially when working on Wall Street, it is important to look put together, classic, and professional at all times. You don’t want to look as though you just rolled out of bed after 3 hours of sleep (although this might likely be the case), but you don’t want to blend in with the crowd. Try a modern suit with a fun color blouse and some simple accessories to stand out yet look appropriate in the finance world.

 The Fashion Mag

You landed a fashion internship because you obviously have great style- so show it off in how you dress for the job! Again, it is important to be appropriate, but make sure to let your personal style shine through. Try bright colors and mixing patterns and textures.

The “Super Casual Office” Internship

Whether it’s for a non-profit, teaching gig, or other job, sometimes employers will tell you that the atmosphere is super casual. However, as you are just an intern and not a full time employee who has been working there for years, be cautious on how casual you dress. Try dressed up white jeans with a cute blazer and flats.

The Tech Start-up

Even in a start-up, small, and more relaxed office environment, it is important to dress for success! Try pairing cropped dress paints and a cute blazer for a classy and chic look.
