His Campus: Goodbye and Good Luck

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

1. I want to go to formal, but have so much work. What do I do?

I have one answer to this question: go! This is probably the last time you will go out this year. Yes, I’m sure you will celebrate once finals are done, but the only downside there is that everyone is done at different times. So, you may be celebrating after some of your closest friends have already gone home.

So, here’s my advice:

1) Buckle down this weekend. Get off Facebook, your phone, and Snapchat–as fun as it is, no one really wants to see your struggling face on the Ivy League snap story. Just do you work.

2) Go into formal knowing you’re going to have a chill night. So, if you’re of age, try to keep it to a 2-3 drink maximum. Then, get up at a descent hour the next day and CRANK those papers out. If you have nothing due the next day, then live it up.

If you’re anything like most of the people in this country, then you probably do better under pressure. So, get yourself on a schedule and don’t think too much about what’s coming. You’ll regret missing out, trust me.

2. Do I pull an all-nighter or wake up at 4:00 AM to finish an essay due at 5:00 PM?

Oh god, you’re not doing well and I’m sorry. So, I’ve definitely pulled my fair share of all-nighters with both a Red Bull and a shot of espresso in hand. I personally much rather get it over with and sleep during the day, but to each his own. You definitely have to do what’s good for you. I mean, best solution: manage your time better and then all nighters are not necessary. But, I’m certainly not one to talk.

3. I met someone on Bumble. What’s my first move?

You know the right thing to do. Ask him or her out! If this person was just looking for a hook up, he or she would probably be on Tinder or would tell you. So, make plans to meet up for drinks or coffee. Best way to go about it.

To all my graduation seniors, best of luck out there! May the real world treat you well. To everyone else, take the summer off.
