Glass House Takes Over Lerner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

I think we all have a hard time leaving the “Columbia bubble” sometimes for the excitement and glamour outside of Morningside Heights. This weekend, you can forget the struggles of navigating the trains or trying to navigate the maps app in the cold because there’s a party right on 114th street.

Glass House Rocks is an annual event thrown in Lerner. The entire building gets transformed into a giant party zone full of dancing, music, food, and other festivities. To get a little more insight about the event, I talked to Jonah Belser, the Glass House Rocks co-chair for Columbia Cottage.

What was the inspiration for this year’s theme?

Last year’s theme was Space Jam, so we figured that, if last year was beyond Earth, this year we’d take Glass House Rocks under the earth. Plus, I’m not going to lie: Back to the Future is one of my favorite movies and I was partly inspired by the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance.

What kinds of activities will there be in different areas of Lerner?

Student groups will be stationed throughout Lerner, occupying almost every room in the building. Activities range from food to trivia to photo booths to karaoke to arts and crafts.

Speaking of activities, what is this “Wave Rave” I keep hearing about?

We are throwing a dance party in room C555 featuring some of Columbia’s finest DJs. We begin with J0I at 9PM, who will get the party started with some emotional and experimental trap. Then DJ Dwai takes over at 10, integrating a danceable mixture of trap and dubstep. The night is concluded with a set by Vonzie, who was recently featured on Billboard’s Next Big Sound chart and is a rising star in the New York dance scene.

Tell me about the food. The food is very important to me.

Our catered finger sandwiches, wraps, and hors d’oeuvres from West Side Market will be distributed throughout the building in front of Roone, in front of room 401, and on the 5th floor outside the dance party room. We will also be having delicious mini cupcakes from Baked by Melissa. Various student groups will also be providing food.

GHR is this Thursday at 8. The link to the Facebook event and more details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/582701408479374/.
