Cuttin Class: A Guide to Denim Cutoffs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

With every new season comes the dreaded (or for us, much anticipated) call for a major wardrobe refresh. A shopportunity, however, though certainly riveting is not always necessary. And if you’re like us, you may not be quite ready to say goodbye to your cut-offs and hello to cropped skinnies just yet. The key here is transition, and as always, we’ve got some expert tips to help you do it right.

A denim cutoff (light, dark , or anything in-between) paired with a loose cotton t or tank is as classic as it gets when its comes to tastefully-tattered denim. Comfy, casual, and cool, this look can carry you into mid-september if the weather’s right. To make your outfit class-appropriate, ditch the flip flops and go for a slightly-worn oxford, or loafer. A ballet-flat works just as well but is best reserved for a slightly more tailored take on this particular look.

Looking to kick it up a notch? A sheer button down with an asymmetrical-tuck comes across as both casual and tailored – as far as cut-offs can really take you, lets be real, ladies – in a way that somehow makes sense. On warmer days, opt for a silky tank for a similarly “dressed-up” alternative. Booties – a continued, yet still very-much-kicking trend from last fall – will add some oomf if you play ‘em right but be wary of pairing this amped up shoe with your too-torn Levie 501’s. Remember, balance is key.

And finally, a word on length. If you can see cheek, it’s probably a no-go. At least for class. But hey, if you can play it right, perhaps with a long-ish sweater that manages to give you some coverage, then we say go for it.

And last but not least…do we even need to say it? Accessorize. Always. A cool bracelet or necklace is a sure way to amp up any look, and that tidbit can carry you into and between any season.
