The beginning of your first year at Barnard consists of new sights, new faces, and new phone contacts. Here are three interesting new first-years you should definitely try to get to know around campus!
Name: Hebah Khan
Hometown: Frisco, Texas (suburb of Dallas)
Potential Major: I’m also considering Econ and Middle Eastern Studies.
Why Barnard? I went to a small high school so I knew that I wanted to retain that small atmosphere but I didn’t want to be in the middle of nowhere – you’d be surprised how much that limits your choice of schools. I like the idea of an all women’s institution, which some people don’t love but I think as an institutional model it’s a really effective way to learn.
What are you looking forward to the most about college? I’m looking forward to seeing what I get involved with because everything under the sun is available to us.
What are you nervous about? I feel like the skill set in terms of what I used in high school doesn’t transfer over well for college so I’m nervous about starting new.
It’s liberating but also nerve-wracking because even though I’ve been a student since I was six, it’s almost as if I’m starting over.
Random fact about you? I know how to beatbox.

Potential Major: I’m thinking about majoring in History but I’m still undecided.
Why Barnard? Â I wanted the feel of a small college but I also like having the resources of a huge research university next door. Â I love New York and everything the city has to offer!
What are you looking forward to the most about college? I’m looking forward to making new friends and the diverse environment here at Barnard.
What are you nervous about? I’m nervous about managing my time so I can do well in all of my classes and still have a social life.
Random fact about you? I play violin and piano.

Name: Naomi Tewodros
Hometown: Rockland, California (outside of Sacramento)
Potential Major: I’m considering Economics.
Why Barnard? I liked the idea of going to a small school in New York City. I’m from Cali so it’s a really different experience from anywhere else. Here at Barnard you have access to many different resources and people who care about you. Why not Barnard?
What are you looking forward to the most about college? I’m excited to know what I’m doing with my life!
Are you nervous about anything? I think it’s natural to be nervous –being here is going to be very different from high school because now academically it’s a totally different playing field. There are so many brilliant people at Barnard and Columbia which can be a bit daunting.
Random fact about you? My parents are from Ethiopia.
