Alternative Spring Break Playlists for the Miami Partier and the California Chiller

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

The bad news is, spring break is half over. The good news is, you have a brand new playlist of songs to make the final days great. The first, for the miami partier, the second for the california chiller. Whoever you are, wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing…we’ve got some beats for you

For the Miami Partier:

Crystal Fighters – Plage – Felix Cartal Remix

If Crystal Fighters wasn’t the best band of all time to begin with (according to one writer of this playlist at least!), they just got a little better with this awesome remix by Felix Cartal. Crystal Fighters is an alternative indie band from the UK that was recently discovered by many top DJs who have remixed their work to create super original new sounds.

Wolfgang Gartner – We Own the Night (feat. Luciana) [Original Mix]

Type “Wolfgang Gartner” into Google and you’ll find a host of pictures of a geeky looking  guy named “Joey Youngman.”  Well, that’s the world of EDM for you… turning nerds into BAMFs for many, many years.

CAZZETTE – Beam Me Up (Kill Mode) (Radio Edit)

This song was recently discovered by many through the shameless advertisement on Spotify. For those of you who don’t use Spotify, you are missing out on this song as it was released solely on Spotify, as well as the joys of nosishly knowing what everyone else is listening to that you have ever met.

Pretty Lights – I Can See It In Your Face

Pretty Lights is just so good! I would encourage anyone to take advantage of an opportunity to see Pretty Lights live, and if not, just listen in your room.

Porter Robinson – Unison – Knife Party Remix

This song screams ultimate rager. Porter Robinson’s electro house tunes mixed with Knife Party’s dubby beats gives this song a perfect balance. Both artists are brilliant, mixed together they are remarkable.

Yeasayer – Madder Red

Why is a band like Yeasayer on a predominantly EDM playlist you might be asking. Well, not only will Yeasayer be performing at ultra, I (Shelby) happen to know their light show is as impressive as any DJ (yeah I said it — check them out and prove me wrong!)

Matt & Kim – Let’s Go

Super awesome that this band is performing at Ultra! This married couple met in music school and  rose to fame with their top hit “Daylight” and by creating a music video of the two of them running naked through Times Square. Yes this really happened, you can watch it here http://vimeo.com/4266613.

Swedish House Mafia – Miami 2 Ibiza – Extended Vocal Mix

No spring break playlist would be the same without the infamous SHM. Everyones loves a classic SHM song, from NYC to Miami to Ibiza to other random parts of the world.

Health – Crimewave

The link doesn’t say so, but this song is by Health and Crystal Castles. Which is slightly ironic, because when I think of Crystal Castles I certainly don’t think of health. Actually, health is probably one of the last things I would associate  with Crystal Castles.

Steve Aoki – Phat Brahms (Steve Aoki & Angger Dimas vs. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike) [Tom

Swoon Remix]

Everything about this song is unusual, from the name to the album artwork which includes a cartoon image of all the DJ’s with wigs on of George Washington’s hair, and the infamously crazy Steve Aoki standing on a piano with a conductor’s wand in his hand.

Florence + The Machine – Spectrum (Say My Name) – Calvin Harris Remix

Calvin Harris’ remix of Florence and the Machine is the perfect combination of mainstream EDM and alternative indie artist with a good voice. This remix is great for getting pumped up and raging, as well as singing in the shower.

For the California Chiller:

The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations

Let’s just say this song can be interpreted in many different ways.  Lead-singer Brian Wilson is mentally,  let’s just say “not there,” from all those good vibrations he picked up  in the 1960s.

Allah-Las – Catamaran

Modern day garage rock that practically screams “get me out of school and by an ocean, please and thank you.”

The Doors – Peace Frog

The Doors have been the quintessential Los Angeles band ever since Jim Morrison did his rounds playing clubs on the the Sunset Strip in the mid-1960s.  A framed picture of Morrison can be found in just about every Venice Beach cafe.  Perfect song to listen to when you
