Full Name: Tim Cashman
Hometown: Baltimore, MD
Class Year: 2014

What do you do on campus?
JM: Hockey
TC: Lacrosse, Undergraduate Philanthropy Council

How did you meet and decide to be roommates?
JM: We were on the same floor of West dorm last year, and became friends
TC: … When housing time rolled around, we decided we’d room together.  However, we had no idea that both of our numbers for the lottery were terrible so we ended in a tiny room in a freshman dorm, despite our current sophomore status.

Describe your experience on your respective sports teams at Colgate:
JM: Hockey at Colgate has been a good experience for me. It has helped me learn a lot about myself on and off the ice. It pushes me to my limit every day. It has taught me how to deal with hard times. Breaking my ankle and finger last year made things tough but my brother who is also on the team, the trainer, and the rest of the team made things much easier. My greatest personal memory was scoring against my mom and dad’s alma mater, Boston College, last year with my whole family in the stands. The best memory as a team was making it to the final four of ECAC and going to Atlantic City. It is hard to recall the funniest moment because something funny happens every day with our team.

TC: One of my favorite moments last year was beating Army on Andy Kerr. Army was ranked 9th in the country at the time and were favorites to win the patriot league.  Winning that game on Andy Kerr was something special, something I hope to recapture again this year.

What is it like living with somebody who isn’t on the same sports team as you?
JM: It is really nice to live with someone outside of my own team. Tim’s a great guy and it also makes it a lot easier to meet new people outside of my own team. We take the same Microeconomics course but other than that our schedules are kind of all over the place. Some days we have time to chill and play squash; other times we barely see each other at all.

TC: Our schedules athletically don’t match up perfectly, but I think we get the same amount of “roommate time” as everyone else.  I think the only real inconvenience of living with someone of a different sports team is when the other person has to wake up at 7 am for practice.

If you could give one piece of advice to a new recruit to your team, what would it be?
JM: Work hard on the ice, work hard in the classroom, and work hard on being a good person.

TC: My advice would be to “buy in.”  You will sacrifice more time to your sport than anything else you do at college, and the guys next to you are doing the same thing.  So put in the effort to get to know your teammates and be a part of the team on and off the field.

What is your favorite thing about Colgate?
JM: The best thing about Colgate is going to school with my brother. I also really like the teachers here. They all seem to care about me as a student and care about my improvement. I also really enjoy talking to people in the Colgate community whether its employees or residents. They all seem like great people. I also have a great group of friends within the hockey program as well as outside of the hockey program. The people of Colgate have treated me very well.

TC: My favorite thing about Colgate is the people.  As corny as it sounds, it’s the reason I love this campus. Everyone here is exactly what you want from classmates: nice, courteous, and respectful.  It is an intangible quality, which makes it the hardest thing to explain to people looking at Colgate.  My second favorite thing is Sundae Sundays in Frank.
