No Makeup, No Problem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

To some, wearing no makeup may be a scary thought, but it doesn’t have to be.   Although I enjoy wearing makeup, I think giving your skin a break once in awhile is necessary. You’ll be less prone to breakouts, and wearing no makeup will help deter the onset of wrinkles. We all have been told that makeup makes us look older, and while that may seem appealing at our age, it’s time to start wanting to look younger before it’s too late for our skin. So, for the next month, I will be going without makeup. Wearing no makeup to school doesn’t seem so bad but not wearing any mascara or bronzer to go out is somewhat frustrating. For most girls, when you dress up you like to wear makeup to feel your best.   I’ve realized though, as long as you keep your skin in good shape, not wearing makeup isn’t so bad.   Trust me; it will be nice to have a few extra minutes of your day to do something more productive with your time..like sleep, which also helps your skin. Clearly, it is better to go au natural. Here are a few ways to look gorgeous without makeup!

1.     Skin. Now that you don’t have to think about makeup, you can focus on your skin. A strict skin care regimen is definitely most important, especially for those who have oily skin. You need to wash and moisturize your face every day! If you are more prone to breakouts, using a facewash and moisturizer with salycic acid is important. My favorite skin care line is by Clinique (all of their products are great), but they aren’t cheap. I use Neutrogena Acne Stress Control Power Cream Wash and Clean and Clear Dual Action Moisturizer Oil Free (this has acne medication in it as well to fight breakouts!).  For those in a rush, or if you are already in bed and you realize you didn’t wash your face, keep thesetowelettes in your drawer just in case!

2.     Food. You know the saying “you are what you eat!” well it’s true. If you’re eating greasy, processed, fatty foods every day, you’re prone to break out. While zits may be okay if you can wear concealer, they become a major problem when you can’t wear makeup and you have a date that night. So, drink water and eat healthy for a clear complexion. Fish, whole grains, blackberries, green tea, tomatoes, and yogurt all will give you a flawless fresh face.

3.     Beautiful brows. Shaped brows instantly give you bright eyes, which is hard to achieve without using concealer. Whether you prefer to pluck, wax, or thread, keep them perfectly shaped!

4.
A healthy glow. I do not really like fake tanners, but this product is a mix of a tanner and a moisturizer. Use Jergens natural Glow Face Moisturizer on top of your skin clearing moisturizer daily to give yourself a little glow (it won’t turn you orange since the tan is very subtle).

5.     Bright eyes. Runways during the fall season are always filled with natural, dewy faced models. Although these models definitely wear some makeup, there are a few makeup free tricks makeup artists use to give their models a natural complexion. First, spray your finger with a bit of hairspray and dab onto your eyelashes. Curl your eyelashes with an eyelasher curler (Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, Sephora is the best).  Then, dab some Vaseline on your lashes to separate them. Mission accomplished, you’re eyes are beautifully bright and without mascara.

6.     ZzZz. This tip is one we all know yet can never seem to achieve. Getting sleep is very important, yet probably the hardest thing to do in college.  If you can get 7-8 hours a night during the week, you will save your complexion.  So, if you find yourself wasting time during your free block, try to log off Facebook and take a nap instead!
