October is always one of my favorite months to find new music because it officially feels like fall! I feel like it comes at the perfect time, when I’m ready to move on from my summer playlists and start getting tired of listening to the same old songs. This October brought some exciting new releases, from long-awaited albums to singles that have quickly become some of my favorite songs of the year. If you’re looking for something to listen to on your walk to class, during a late-night study session, or on your next fall drive, here are some of the best new releases from October that deserve a spot on your playlist.
- Remi Wolf – Mud (album)
In full transparency, this is the whole reason I wanted to write this article. This album is by far my favorite release of the year. There are NO skips, I repeat, no skips. It brings such a fresh, fun vibe to the music world, especially considering that it was recorded in different Airbnbs as Remi and her team traveled. This is Remi’s third studio album, and even though this was my introduction to her music, I am officially a fan. Even the title and its meaning are beautiful and have resonated with so many people. Remi describes “mud” as a metaphor for navigating life’s heavier moments, including breakups, anxiety, burnout, and early sobriety, while also embracing the messy, freeing parts of life. Whether it’s dancing in the rain or letting yourself get a little messy, the album reminds us that sometimes there is beauty in being right in the thick of it. Some of my favorite songs on the album are “Bottle,” “Champagne,” and “Guess.” But seriously, this 11-track album is amazing from start to finish, and I think everyone should give it a listen when they get the chance. It’s definitely one of those albums that deserves to be heard in its entirety!
- Dominic Fike – How to Quit Smoking (album)
Dominic Fike’s new album came out on October 30th, so it is very new, but even from the singles released ahead of time, I already knew I was going to like it. Fike is an American singer-songwriter known for his unique mix of alternative, indie rock, and hip-hop, and this album is another great example of his ability to blend different sounds while keeping his music catchy and personal. Once again, we have an upbeat alternative album that is perfect for a drive or a walk around Hamilton. I love the laid-back, guitar-driven sound, which feels especially fitting for fall. “Wallflower” and “Pangea” are my current favorites from the release, but I’m excited to spend more time with the full 15-track album. One of the coolest details about this project is that Fike created much of it while on tour, recording in hotel rooms and other spaces along the way rather than in a traditional studio. That spontaneous, on-the-road energy makes the album feel fresh and fun.
- Emma Ogier – Fly 1111 (upcoming album)
Okay, this is kind of cheating because the album hasn’t fully been released yet, but I’m already excited for it! Funny enough, Emma Ogier is an artist I recently discovered after noticing she was also featured on Dominic Fike’s new album. I loved her vocals and style on his project, which made me want to explore more of her music. After listening to some of her past work, I can confidently say she is totally up my alley. “Baby Don’t Hurt Me,” my personal favorite of hers, has an alternative folk sound with relaxed vocals and drums that create the perfect laid-back fall vibe. However, Ogier also knows how to lean into her alternative rock and pop influences. Another favorite of mine, “Rocksteady/HeavyMetal,” features an electric guitar section that feels so fun to jam along to, while still maintaining the chill, unique sound that makes her music stand out. I’m definitely looking forward to hearing what she has in store for Fly 1111.
- Rex Orange County – Dream Fatigue (upcoming album)
Last but not least is an old-time favorite, Rex Orange County. His music brings some of the best fall vibes, with a warm, cozy alternative sound that is hard to explain but so easy to love. His use of synths, orchestral elements, and layered vocals is something I always enjoy hearing in his music. Although the full album comes out November 6, the singles are too good to leave out! “Grandma Song,” “Hannah Montana,” and “Indecision” (featuring Daniel Caesar) are all beautiful tracks. The upcoming album also features collaborations with Brendan Yates of Turnstile, Dev Hynes, and Mustafa, making it an exciting new chapter in Rex’s sound. I love how much there is to unpack production-wise, while still feeling so earnest and familiar. In my mind, this is the perfect alternative music for autumn.
I hope you’ll give these releases a listen soon! October was such a fun month for new music, and I’m excited to see what November has in store, especially with the upcoming Grammy nominations. I’m always looking for new artists and songs to add to my playlists, so I’m definitely open to any recommendations. Until next month, happy listening!
