How To… Get in the Halloween Spirit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

In class the other day I overheard someone proclaim, “I hate Halloween.” I’m sorry to be this blunt but if you hate Halloween, you need to lighten up. I was caught off guard by my classmate’s statement since as a child Halloween was my favorite time of the year. I would decorate my front doorstep with cobwebs, skulls, spooky noisemakers, and every year I’d make my mom order dry ice to boil in a black cauldron. Kids are so into everything (especially Halloween) and the indifference we gain as we grow up has honestly made us boring during our college years. Lets at least try to change this by being festive this Halloween. At Colgate, the October 31st festivities last 3-4 days and you can be whoever/whatever you want during this time- what could you possibly hate about that? Unless you don’t like candy, I can’t see how someone could hate Halloween. I’ve shared below some fun activities that hopefully can convert those Halloween haters. Happy Halloween!

1. Carve pumpkins and roast the seeds! All you need is a pumpkin, candle, and a pumpkin carving kit (sometimes a knife works better!). All items are conveniently sold at Price Chopper and inexpensive! Once you’re done carving the pumpkin, take out the seeds to cook for a salty treat. Rinse the seeds in a colander, let them dry with paper towel sheets, then spread onto a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees and roast for 30-40 minutes until golden brown.

2. Make homemade caramel apples! A caramel apple is the quintessential fall treat. While buying a caramel apple from a store is still delicious, it’s more fun to make one. Find the recipe from my blog here: http://carolinescucina.tumblr.com/post/11803486147/caramel-apples.

3. Watch a spooky Halloween movie. Now you have a valid excuse to stay in tonight besides the fact that it’s freezing and possibly snowing again. Curl up and watch Hocus Pocus, Halloween Town, and/or Casper – my all time favorites.

4. Host a themed party! If you live in an apartment or the townhouses, why not host a small Halloween party with your friends? Decorate with cobwebs, use test tubes and beakers for drinks, and a cauldron for a punch bowl. Check out the drink blog Sloshed for other Halloween themed drinks!

5. Wear orange and black! Unfortunately we can no longer wear our costumes to school anymore, but you can still be festive! Try to incorporate some orange and black into your wardrobe on Monday. Unfortunately we’re not in college for much longer and after this we won’t have much of an excuse nor will we be able to pull off. dressing up in costumes and looking ridiculous!
