THE FINAL WEEK: The Year’s End for Juniors Going Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colgate chapter.

Everyone knows it’s Finals Week for all students, but for many juniors it’s also the Final Week of our year at Colgate before we go abroad for the spring. Luckily, the pain of leaving the world’s greatest campus has been slightly eased by the recent weather, but we all know some separation anxiety is bound to set in sometime soon. In fact, the Office of Off-Campus Studies recently released the results of a poll* that asked seniors what they missed most about Colgate while abroad. The results:

18% -The scenery
18% – Our 4 sources of nightlife
0% – Hamilton Police Department
0% – Campus Distributions
22% – Denver the Cruiser Driver
41%- Slices
1% – Other.

So based on these groundbreaking statistics and an overall love of our amazing campus, I’ve whipped up a checklist of important “Colgate things” to do this week. Before you pack up your storage unit, print your boarding passes and wave the hill goodbye til August, try to hit all six!

Get a slice
You need to at least once, or probably every night. There’s no excuse to deny yourself of CNY’s finest cuisine when they deliver right to Club Case.. Also according to Wikipedia, almost all of the world besides the US and Canada has no idea what ranch is – a.k.a. get your fix before you globetrot.

Go Sledding
While practically every student and their mother is from the tristate area, this one is important regardless of whether or not you get snow at home. Sledding is like going to the doctor, celebrating your birthday, and watching the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show: you have to do it once every year. And if you wait until break to cross it off your winter bucket list, it’s highly unlikely you’ll find a hill better than any at Colgate.
Your Favorite Restaurants
Regardless of the religion you practice, December is cross-culturally often regarded as a great month for food. Don’t waste your exam-week hunger cravings on Frank or the COOP, especially as the quality and quantity of their resources tend to drop off fast at the end of the semester. Instead, take a study break and indulge in all the HamEats, Bog sandwiches, and Tollhouse pie you’ll need to last you the next few months. It’s no secret that I will personally miss the Clubhouse next semester… so I may or may not have three reservations there this week.

Count all the Bean Boots
Just a personal pastime of mine when you’re stuck in the library. Recommended for those with short attention spans, good vision, high cynicism for Colgate’s homogeneity.

The Jug
Ah, the Jug! If there’s one thing you can get at Colgate that you won’t get abroad, it’s the Jug. If you haven’t been released from the wrath of finals in time to go out Thursday, squeeze in a visit between Friday’s various open parties. Make sure to say goodbye to Michelle for the year so she can pretend she knows your name and fake an empathetic farewell. Hitting up this truly one-of-a-kind establishment one more time this year is a win-win; you’ll either have a great time and live up your final hours here, or you’ll remember exactly why you can’t wait to get a break from this place.

Hit the Gym
Yes, even you, my fellow nap enthusiasts and Byrne Dairy Chipwich lovers. Even for all of you who think going to the gym sucks, at least it sucks a little less when it’s Colgate’s gym. I personally find whenever I go home on break, Trudy has gradually made me about as spoiled as a Real Housewives’ lap dog. And whether you’re shacking up soon in a Copenhagen dorm or a hostel in Ecuador, chances aren’t great that your elliptical will have a personal TV screen as nice as these. If you really hate working out around 50 other people you know, at least you have 9 months in hiding to recover!

So make the most of this final week here on the world’s most amazing campus, and enjoy your experience abroad in the amazing world. See you next August, jet setters!
