Before we dive in, let’s appreciate the fact that Spotify and Apple Music both have some pretty bomb playlists. And, thankfully, they have tons of playlists that apply to almost any mood. Whether it’s hours spent on Miller 3rd floor, trying to finish an essay that’s due in less than 12 hours, or ~ sad boy hours ~ spent in your room, Spotify and Apple Music both have perfect playlists that provide some type of comfort and company.

While Spotify and Apple Music playlists do their job, they can get very annoying sometimes, especially when you’ve been listening to the same Focus playlist for so long that you find yourself singing along to classical music. Trust me, we’ve all been there before, so here’s why it’s time to switch things up and create your very own playlist!

1. It’s a stress-relieving thing to do

I know it’s bad, but there are times when I don’t feel like doing anything. Instead of feeling more unproductive and guilty than you already are, why not go on Spotify/Apple Music and add some songs to your playlists? Okay… adding songs to playlists isn’t the same as getting actual work done, but at least you’re doing something, instead of simply lying in bed or watching Netflix. Besides, it’s a stress-relieving thing to do because it takes your mind off from work, and listening to songs as you add them to your playlist is always relaxing.

2. You might discover some new songs or songs you’ve forgotten about

Ever since I started making my own playlists, I’ve been discovering new songs and songs I’ve somehow forgotten over the years. Thanks to Spotify’s Recommended Songs, which appears at the very bottom of each playlist and shows recommended songs based on the songs in the playlist, I’ve been listening to songs from different genres that I would’ve never come across. In addition to exploring new music, I even made a playlist for songs that I used to listen to in middle school but forgot about them until they popped up in Recommended Songs. Still worried that you won’t find any good songs in the section? Well, guess what? You can always hit that refresh button, and a new list of ten other songs pop up!

3. It’s a thoughtful gift for your friend or significant other

As we reach the final months of 2019, Thanksgiving and Christmas sneak up on us before we even know it. If you’re like me, who “sometimes” struggle with finding the perfect gift for my friends, try making a personalized playlist for them! It’s a cute thing to do for your friend/significant other because you get to create a playlist that not only suits their music taste but also allows you to include songs that are special to you both. If they loved the playlist and want to add more songs to the playlist, you can always make it collaborative on Spotify, so both of you can keep adding to the list.

4. It’s a great way to bond

Having a collaborative playlist with your friends/significant other is nothing but amazing because you get to play them in the car during road trips, or even at parties. It’s always more fun than simply putting on playlists that are made by Spotify/Apple Music because sometimes songs on these playlists might not be the ones you guys were looking for. Another great thing about playing collaborative playlists is that all of you probably know the songs word for word, so you get to jam to every single song. And even if you don’t know all the lyrics to a song, it’s still fun to blast them while you’re having a good time with people you care about!

5. You’ll (hopefully) find yourself loving it and making more playlists

To be completely honest, I didn’t understand the purpose of making my own playlists when I first started using Spotify. I thought making playlists would limit myself to only listening to songs on my playlists rather than playing any song that I felt like listening to at the moment. Weirdly enough, I even thought it would be a time-consuming thing to do. However, when I started to get tired of listening to playlists created by Spotify, I thought it was time to make my own playlists. If you look at the number of playlists I have on my Spotify, you’ll know that I instantly fell in love with making them and only continued to make more. Thankfully, Spotify does not limit the number of playlists you can have, and you can have up to 10,000 songs in each of your playlists.

Still listening to playlists created by Spotify/Apple Music and secretly getting tired of them? Go ahead and open up Spotify/Apple Music and start creating playlists! Hopefully, you’ll thank yourself for making this ~ life-changing ~ decision.
