Gym Chronicles: Checking in With Your Resolutions

Its February now and you’re either in full swing of your fitness routine, late getting started, feeling disappointed, or somewhere in between. In fact, maybe you have forgotten about your New Year’s Resolution all together. Do not fear! It is the beginning of the Second Semester and I encourage you to make a spring resolution.

To begin, check in with how you are doing with your previous resolution. How can you improve? What are you doing well? How can you tweak your plan? What do you like? What do you dislike? After you’ve answered these questions, hopefully you’ve written down the answer to these and your previous resolution goals, you can compare the two.

Next, you need to put your plan in action. The best way to do this is not by setting a date to begin, but by setting a date to reach your goals. Maybe you want to be bikini ready by Spring Break. Great! Write that date down and work towards reaching your goals immediately. We’re back at school full time and although it’s snowy the gym is not too far away. In addition, if you are bored with your routine the school offers great classes to mix it up. Try Wednesday’s step class at 4:30pm, my friends and I love this class; it’s super fun and hard. For an even different workout try Power Yoga, which is offered Tuesdays at 12pm, Wednesdays at 5:30pm, and Fridays at 12pm.

If you’re happy with your progress, then keep it up! Try incorporating new workouts into your routine before you get bored and then going back to your regular schedule. Or you could set new goals!

Just because January is over does not mean you can’t start new resolutions. I think the beginning of the
semester is as good a time as any. Maybe you set non-fitness oriented goals, that’s great too and you should definitely check in with how you’re doing with those. Resolutions are not a competition or a group project. Resolutions are a way for you to work on yourself. It’s great if you have support from friends and family, but your biggest supporter should be you! For my Spring Semester resolution I’m going to try to do more yoga, see you there!
