DIY: Birthdays – Colby Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

It seems that almost every other week another birthday rolls around and something fun must be done.  We could all go to Wal-Mart and get the most ridiculous things we can find from the “as seen on TV” section, and sometimes this is perfect, but other times you just need to DIY.  Below are some easy steps to follow to make your next friend’s birthday extra special!

1. Make sure you are well-acquainted with the birthday person and know how they would want to celebrate.  Do they like surprises?  Are they quiet and hate all attention on them?  Consider these questions before beginning the planning.

2. You need a card.  As easy as it is to go buy the funniest singing card at CVS, it is sometimes more meaningful if you hand make one.  Try putting pretty tape on the cover in random patterns.  You don’t have to be very artistic and all it takes is some tape and a piece of construction paper.  And don’t leave out the note inside, chances are you don’t get to say how much you appreciate them on a daily basis, so use this as your opportunity.

3. Now you need a gift.  This is when you can let your creativity flow! Use that same tape you have for the card and make your friend a cool painting, using the tape to create a pattern or to write out an inside joke.  Remember, the more personalized you can make it the better.  Any artwork you make  (even if its bad) will be appreciated, I promise! You could also make them a friendship bracelet, or decoupage pictures of you and the friend onto a box or a pencil jar.

4. Throw a party.  You have to celebrate, whether it’s throwing a surprise party or ordering WHOP with a few friends.  I suggest going all out on the decorations either way!  Enjoy your perfect DIY birthday!
