5 Tips for Redoing Your Room When You Need a Change

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Colby chapter.

Midterms are among us and by this time of year we’ve officially been stuck in the same old dorms for far too long. It’s common to feel bored and a bit in a rut at this point of the semester. When you’re feeling stuck or just like you need a change in your life if you’re going through a rough time, giving your dorm room a makeover is a perfect way to feel a little better. Here are some tips on how to change up your space and upgrade your mood along the way:

Furniture

The first step in a full room makeover is to rally up your friends and get as many hands as you can to rearrange your furniture. Changing my bed from being parallel to my window to being up against my wall and moving my desk to the opposite side of my room created the feeling of a whole new space.

Update Your Photos

It’s always refreshing to update the photos on your wall. Whether you have new people in your life who aren’t yet represented, or you just feel like it’s time to change out some outdated photos, going to CVS to print out a few new pictures can really make your room feel new. I bought a cheap frame at Walmart to put some photos in, and printed out a whole bunch of my favorite pictures to cover the wall over my bed. Putting photos around your room is a great reminder of the important people in your life during any tough moment.

Hang Lights

One of the best ways to spice up a boring room is to hang lights in interesting ways. Everyone knows fairy lights can make a room way more cozy and decorated, but switching how you hang your lights can give a whole different vibe. At the beginning of the year I hung my tube lights in a wavy shape, but my new redone room has them lined neatly at the top of the walls.

Pillows

Another great way to change up your room is to get a few new pillows. They don’t have to be the most expensive, but a couple fresh new pillows can really be a game changer. I find that the more pillows a bed has, the comfier the room feels.

Trinkets

Adding a few random trinkets around your room can make the space feel more personal and polished. Try arranging things like succulents and ring holders on your windowsill for a cute collection to add to your room.

Redecorating your living space is a great way to take your mind off of some of the stress that comes with this time of year. A room makeover won’t cure all your problems, but it is certainly a fun tool that can help you feel recharged and ready for the rest of the semester.
