What’s Holding You Back From Changing Your Life?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Coastal Carolina chapter.

Have you ever been disappointed in yourself because you know you could be doing better? I know I have. I know I can be doing better in my life right now. It’s a hard realization for me to even admit. But I am the one responsible for where I am in life right now. No one else is responsible for my lack of motivation bedsides myself. But you know what? That is the first step you need to take to change your life; you have to recognize the problem.

Everyone has problems and everyone has insecurities but you don’t have to let them hold you back or define you. With some will power, you can overcome what’s holding you back from reaching your full potential. It’s a journey but it’s worth it. You deserve to be the happiest you can be and to achieve all the dreams you have. However, you can’t do that if you don’t take control of your life and start making changes.

Sometimes you have to look in the mirror and ask yourself “do I love myself?”, “Am I happy with myself?”, and “Are there things I need to change?” Your answers to these questions might not be what you want to hear, but facing them is what you need to do. If you know there are things you need to change then what is holding you back from changing them? For example, I was unhappy with how I looked so I got a gym membership. I was disappointed that I stopped painting, so I started again. I knew I needed to step out of my comfort zone, so I started writing.

Sure it’s a lot easier said than done. Making the change was the hardest part for me. I knew what I needed to do I just wasn’t doing it. I felt like I was waiting around for someone else to push me to make the necessary changes in my life. Well isn’t that just ridiculous? You need to be your own biggest motivator, you need to say “I know what I need to do so I am going to do it.” Seriously, don’t let anything hold you back, especially your own self.

I was comfortable where I was in life but I knew that wasn’t going to get me anywhere. I knew I had to really push myself out of my comfort zone if I wanted to see any progress. It took me weeks of stressing about how unhappy I was before I decided to do something about it. Getting a gym membership took me 10 minutes. I spent weeks sulking in my disappointment for not doing it when it only took me 10 minutes to make that change. I am never going to let myself do that again. I made all these amazing changes in my life within a week and I never have been happier.

Stop letting yourself hold you back from accomplishing what you want. If you aren’t living the life you want, why? What’s stopping you? Why not start making those changes right now. Why spend one more day unhappy, one more day stressing, or one more day disappointed? If you know what you need to do, just do it. You will thank yourself later.
