Whether she came to you via page, screen, or record, only one thing is clear; Daisy Jones is the talk of TikTok! If you are unfamiliar with the character, she is the protagonist in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s hit novel Daisy Jones and the Six. Loosely based on the infamous tale of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, the story follows the aforementioned Daisy and her journey with the up and coming band The Six. Following its release in 2019, the book practically blew up; even earning a Goodreads Choice Award for best historical fiction that same year. Amazon’s recent screen adaptation certainly reignited the buzz for the novel and all things 70s!

Though Reid draws inspiration from many musical icons of the 1970s, Daisy herself is entirely fictional. Her style and flair, however, is making very real waves. So much so that there is now an Amazon storefront and a collaboration with Free People inspired by the show. Daisy definitely falls into the ‘free spirit’ archetype. She often acts on impulse and fears being restrained. She encapsulates this ideal beautifully through the infamous “I am not the muse. I am the somebody” quote.

As for her style, simply put, Daisy is ‘bohemian chic’. She is often seen wearing flowy shawls, crochet tops, bell bottoms, and chunky boots. Denise Wingate, the show’s costume designer, notes that she wanted everything to feel more real in opposition to the typical period drama. Wingate also regards lead actress Riley Keough’s desire for Daisy to be Daisy rather than a Stevie Nicks knockoff. Daisy’s style is reminiscent of Linda Ronsstadt and Cher’s early days along with nods to Nicks.

To achieve Daisy’s look is to play heavily into the vintage aesthetic. Not only was vintage all the rage in the 70s, but Daisy and The Six are meant to be struggling artists. They couldn’t afford lodging when they arrived in California, let alone a whole new wardrobe. A simple trip to the thrift store should do the trick! As a big crocheter, I adore the crochet clothing trend Daisy often graces the stage in. Many retail stores are starting to carry crocheted items such as tops and bags. Not only is it a popular trend in fashion, but crochet is also easy to learn!! The “cowboy boot and flare pants” craze are also excellent nods to Miss Jones! Don’t forget your gold hoops to top it all off!

Although the imagery of running wild in any one of Daisy’s outfits is gorgeous, it is important not to glorify everything she does. Behind the fame and talent, Daisy struggles with substance abuse. Luckily, Daisy is able to overcome her battle in her time after the band. Keogh, who experienced similar issues within her own family, strived to minimize the glamor Hollywood often glosses addiction with. It is equally as important for fans of the material not to backtrack on its message.

Heavier topics aside, I definitely see remnants of Daisy’s style being the next big summer trend! The key here is to simply have fun with it. Whatever you’ve wanted to experiment with, go for. Pull out the fun makeup, fringe, and glitter! Run wild and free with your style, little bird.
