Why Does Fall Have to be “Basic”?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

Why does being “basic” always go hand-in-hand with fall? It’s time to admit that our society has started to use the label “basic” too often. It’s thrown around everywhere and now it seems that all the things I used to love to do in the fall will just make me a typical “basic” girl, and that’s not fair.

We’ve gotten obsessed as a society with “basic” girls. Everyone has to make sure the world knows that wearing boots and vests, drinking Pumpkin Spice Lattes or hot apple cider, and even going to visit pumpkin patches fits you into the mold of “basic-ness”.

But so many of these things we call “basic” are just normal parts of the season. Pumpkin patches are to October what Christmas trees are to December. People always go to get pumpkins in the fall and it never made them “basic” before. The same goes for wearing boots and vests. It’s getting colder and people bring out their warmer clothes around this time of year. And surprise! Boots and vests were meant for colder weather.

People are always called out for their “basic” pictures too. And I admit that it’s a little funny when girls post pictures of their PSLs, but taking photos of the beautiful leaves and having fun with your friends on a hay ride shouldn’t be something that’s slapped with a label. This is all just part of enjoying fall.

It sucks when I have to make fun of the “basic” outfit I’m wearing, or when I refuse to wear or do something because I know I’ll be called out for being “basic.” I love my boots and I love drinking hot apple cider in the crisp weather, and that’s something that I’ve always liked to do, way before these simple things were deemed “basic.”

This whole label of being “basic” has taken away from this amazing season. Sometimes it’s hard to enjoy yourself when you know you’re showing your “basic-ness.” It’s time to stop over-labeling and just enjoy fall. Not everything has to be “basic” because not everything is. Some things are just part of this beautiful time of year.

Fall is too important to be deemed “basic.” It’s not meant to fit into that label. So take a step back, breathe in the crisp air, and just enjoy.

FIrst I drink the coffee, then I do the things.
