Here’s What Happened When I Wore Makeup For a Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

Let me start by saying that I have zero problems with makeup. I totally respect anyone’s choice to wear it every day or not. I personally have chosen for the last few years to not wear it all that much. It wasn’t even a conscious choice, or a protest of any kind, it was more out of laziness. I just didn’t feel like taking the time to do it, and I was okay with the way I looked without it. I typically only wear it when I absolutely have to or on those random days when I just feel like wearing some. I decided that I wanted to go a whole week wearing makeup and see if I felt any different.

I didn’t do anything crazy most days, usually just some concealer and mascara and making sure my brows were ~on fleek~. There were a couple days that I wore eyeshadow, eyeliner, foundation — the works — but, for the most part, I kept it simple. I just made sure that I was wearing at least a little bit of makeup everyday.

It was nice to spend a little bit of time on myself everyday and to look a little fancy and nicer. It also encouraged me to dress up a little more than my usual athletic shorts and big t-shirt. It was also nice to feel a little put-together when I’m usually 10/10 shambley. It was, however, an extra amount of time I had to account for when I was getting ready in the morning. Let me tell you, the mornings when I was running late I was pretty annoyed that I had to do it. There was one morning where I overslept, and the added stress of having to do my makeup was not what I needed, but alas, I made it to class on time and survived.

I wouldn’t say that this week completely changed my life, or had that profound of an effect on me, but I do think I may end up wearing makeup more frequently on a day-to-day basis, and not only when I absolutely have to. Makeup is super fun, a cool way to express yourself, or to play up features you really like about yourself. I wouldn’t consider myself an advocate for or against it. Either way, I think you should do what makes you happy. If you love getting dolled up, and you love the artistry of makeup and you live for a good highlight, go for it! If you’d rather not wear it and love to let your freckles or acne scars show, or you’re simply too lazy to do it, go for it! Just do what makes you happy.

I'm a junior at CNU majoring in communication studies and minoring in psychology. I spend most of my time in the library or binge-watching somethng on netflix. I enjoy the outdoors, a good cup of coffee, taking care of animals and the environment, and writing articles about topics that matter to me. Enjoy!
