Okay, I know CNU is at LEAST an hour away from Richmond, but I happen to love the city, and it’s so full of good food. During the hurricane closing, I took a quick trip to Richmond and ate at some of my favorite new spots!

Soul Taco is the Best Taco I Ihink I’ve Ever Had

This was the first time I’d ever brought my car to Richmond, and thank god I had it because I got to eat at the mouth-watering Soul Taco! Soul Taco has a hipster vibe about a 10 minute drive away from VCU main campus, but the parallel parking is so worth it. The menu offers a bunch of different and unique tacos all topped with super tasty veggies and usually some form of avocado. My favorite item from the menu was the Chicken Fried Carne Asada, which had the best marinated steak topped with avocado and a chipotle sauce that complemented the taco with a kick of spice.

NuVegan Cafe Gave Me the Vegan Lasagna I Never Knew I Needed

I’ve never been vegan, but I’ve always admired the persistence and motivations vegans have for their diet. My best friend who lives in Richmond was once vegan, so NuVegan was a place that she frequented. I finally got to try it this visit, and it was amazing. My boyfriend has soy and bean allergies–effectively making vegan options an allergy hazard for him, but when we all went together, they were very accommodating and more than willing to provide ingredients and allergen information for us. We landed on the mac and cheese and the lasagna, and I swear I’ve never had a creamier lasagna. Somehow, I know I’m going to wind up back here time and time again. NuVegan is also central to VCU campus and definitely walking distance!

Fancy Biscuit Has the Cutest Ambiance and the Freshest Feeling Food

Fancy Biscuit in Richmond has been a breakfast favorite of mine for a little while. The biscuits are soft, and the signature muffins are sandwiches that my friends swear by. While it can be a little bit of a walk from VCU’s main campus, it’s definitely worth it. My most recent visit, I opted for a create your own biscuit with their signature buttermilk biscuit topped with a fried local egg, their applewood smoked bacon, and pepperjack cheese. Basically, the best bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich I’d ever had.

Joe’s Inn Gives You a Portion So Big You Barely Know What to Do With it All.

Joe’s Inn was an amazing experience! On a Saturday at 5:00 pm, the place was hopping! Finding parking was a bit of a hassle, but the walk from the car to the restaurant was 100% worth it. Joe’s portion sizes are HUGE and their spin on Italian food will fill you right up. My order included the Spaghetti Albert, which was a portion about half the size of the average baking pan full of pasta. I enjoyed my noodles, but the winner of the night was definitely my boyfriend’s Chicken Parmigiana Sub. The breaded chicken was amazing, and the combination of the sub with the freshly cooked fries was amazing! Joe’s Inn can be a boogie from VCU’s main campus–about a 10 minute drive–but if you have the chance, you should definitely go!

Christian’s Pizza is Cheap, Good Pizza.

Chirstian’s is good for late night pizza. I’ll be honest, the place is cramped, the service is mediocre, and the atmosphere is loud and drunk, but the pizza was so good! After 11 pm, Christian’s has their huge cheese and pepperoni slices up for $2.50. There were other pizzas with toppings on them, but I really just needed to sink my teeth into a big slice of greasy cheese pizza, and I was honestly so satisfied. The best news about Christian’s is how centric they are to campus, and how easily affordable their slices can be.

Richmond is full of good food, and a visit to RVA can be an amazing experience if you know where to look!
