CNU’s Best Dance Crew 2015: Building Strong Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

There are a number of events during the spring semester that CNU students excitedly look forward to. One of these events is Gamma Phi Beta’s annual affair, CNU’s Best Dance Crew. This year it will be held on March 26th at 6 p.m. in the Freeman Field House.

The event brings together a wide range of organizations from across campus in a spirited but friendly dance competition that is widely attended by members of the CNU community. Not only does Best Dance Crew contribute to a sense of unity between Captains, but it also raises money for a good cause: Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropic mission of “Building Strong Girls.”

Said Gamma Phi Beta member and 22-year-old senior Alyssa Sinclair, “Dance Crew is my absolute favorite event because it gives the entire CNU community the opportunity to make an impact. All different types of organizations – Greeks, athletes, clubs – come together to be a part of something that is larger than themselves. To me, that is a beautiful thing.”

19-year-old sophomore Madison Setness, Gamma Phi Beta Philanthropy Chair and head of Dance Crew this year, explained that “100 percent of the proceeds raised at Dance Crew go directly to the Gamma Phi Beta Foundation, and from there are divided and given to Girls Inc. and Girls on the Run.”

According to Setness, Girls Inc. “Provides a safe environment where girls are built up and encouraged to be smart and bold… Girls on the Run aims to promote positive self image and healthy habits by training (young girls) to run a 5k with running coaches.”

Sinclair explained, “Both of these organizations help mentor young girls through after school activities and provide them a space where they can thrive and know they can grow into successful and influential women in society.”

Additionally, Girls Inc. and Girls on the Run allow sisters of Gamma Phi Beta to work hands-on to help younger generations. 20-year-old junior Bri Weiner, Public Relations Vice President, said, “All our sisters have had strong mentors in their lives that made them the resilient women that they are. We work with organizations like Girls Inc. and Girls on the Run because they allow us to be mentors for others.”

Girls Inc. and Girls on the Run use money raised from Best Dance Crew to facilitate events and provide materials to girls in order to motivate and educate them. Setness said, “Both organizations line up with our philanthropic mission to build strong girls, something every woman can relate to because they were once a young girl faced with body insecurities, self-confidence issues, or societal pressures.”

This year, attendees can expect a great variety of performances from 20 teams. Among them is the defending champion, Kappa Sigma, as well as members of Event Staff, Alpha Kappa Psi, Crew Leaders, and a Pi Lam/Pearls team, just to name a few.

Also in attendance will be a panel of guest judges, including CNU and Gamma Phi Beta alumna and the CCP’s Assistant Director for Employer Relations, Monica Hill.

If you don’t want to miss this awesome event, grab a ticket beforehand in the DSU this week for $3. If you decide to get one at the door, they’ll be $5.
