20 Struggles Every Introvert in College Knows to be True

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

Being an introvert is really hard, especially in college. People are always going to parties and sunbathing on the school lawn in big groups while you sit in your dorm room watching Netflix. It’s easy to feel like no one understands the struggles of being shy, but so many do! Here’s a list of some of the most common struggles introverts deal with in college.

  • The first day of classes sucks because you sit by yourself in a corner if you don’t know anyone.

  • And you tend to not make new friends in classes unless someone talks to you first.

  • You dread ice-breakers at the start of every year.

  • You want to say something in class, but every time you try, the words get caught in your throat.

  • You walk/bike alone to all of your classes.

  • And you feel uncomfortable when you pass a bunch of people talking–especially if they look at you pityingly.

  • You hate when random classmates decide to walk and talk with you outside of class.

  • Roommates think you’re stuck up for wanting a lot of alone time.

  • You want to make new friends, but it’s really hard to approach people.

  • You want to be around people, just not too many people.

  • You are too scared to go to interest meetings for clubs and rush sororities/fraternities, even though you really want to get involved.

  • You avoid going to mixers because of all the small talk.

  • Public Speech class is your worst nightmare.

  • Group projects are your worst nightmare.

  • Any oral presentation is your worst nightmare.

  • Networking at career fairs is really hard because you come off as so awkward and insecure.

  • It’s really hard to step foot in the gym because you feel so intimidated.

  • Parties are your worst nightmare.

  • You want nothing more than to curl up in bed at the end of the day.

  • But, you’ll gladly put up with all the small talk for the great friends and memories you make in college.
