14 Reasons Why Your Mom Should Be Your Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CNU chapter.

After going away to school, I had a new found respect for my mom. Don’t get me wrong, I had all the love in the world for this woman even before the college life hit me, but something about having to coddle myself just made me realize how much this woman actually deserves mad props.

1. No matter how much you suck at something, she’ll reward your effort.

We’ve all been there. You threw the big game, bombed a final exam, blanked during a presentation… It feels awful, but there’s one person who’s always happy to be your biggest cheerleader.

2. She puts your needs before hers.

Let’s be real: you think this woman wants to drive your ass around on Friday night? Picking up three more obnoxious teenagers and taking you to frickin’ Taco Bell when she could be kicking back with a glass of wine is NOT her ideal weekend. Give the woman credit where credit is due.

3. She’s the only one that insults you out of love.

Mom is never one to hold back when it comes to constructive criticism, and she’s also not afraid to kill your ego a little bit when you’re feeling a little too cocky. She’s just doing her job to keep you balanced but being a savage while doing so!

4. She keeps it real.

If we’re being honest, your mom will never sugarcoat anything that’s actually relevant. If you need someone’s honest opinion and want to cut the BS, she’s the one to turn to.

5. She’s the only one that’ll continue to hold you when you cry (no matter how big you get).

As savage and sarcastic as mothers can be, when their baby is in tears, the instincts kick into overdrive. Can you remember a single time you broke down crying and your mom didn’t coddle you? Plus, a breakdown is not uncommon for a college girl, so she’s got her work cut out for her.

6. If you’re forever alone, SHE’LL be your Valentine.

She’s been there countless times. February 14th rolls around and you’re laying in bed watching the same chick flick for the 37th time while eating a heart shaped pizza. Invite mom in to share with you. She’ll love you more than any significant other could anyway.

7. If someone hurts you, she will actually ruin them.

Admit it, as much as she may like to pick on you, she’s the only one who’s allowed to. Anyone else dare hurts her baby and she WILL go into mama bear mode. Heaven help whoever that poor victim is.

8. SHE COOKS FOR YOU!

Do I even need to elaborate? This woman slaves over a stove to feed you, and not just anything, but she actually prepares meals for you. You know anyone else in the world that will take actual time out of their day to make you something decent to eat?

9. You can spill all the gossip you want to her, and she won’t tell a soul.

Let’s face it, we all need our fix. Everyone, at least once in a while, hears a juicy secret that they just have to tell someone. You can tell your friends, your significant other, or that one girl you sit next to in stats, but you know that secret is going to spread like a virus! Mom’s got your back, and even if she lets a few of her mommy friends know, who cares!? They never have to see those people you talked about.

10. She brags about you!

This may be partially for her own personal gain, but you know this woman flaunts you any chance she gets. Not only does she love you, but she wants everyone else to know how much she loves you, not to mention how great you are.

11. She teaches you the wonders of being a woman.

So, the majority of us suffered through sex-ed most of our years in school, and, if we’re being honest, your friends and your older siblings taught you a good deal of stuff as well. The real question is, did anyone tell you how to measure your own bra size, how to prevent lipstick from getting on your teeth, and how to get out of any disaster date? If anyone did teach you that, it was most likely your mom…or the internet, but that’s beside the point…

12. She won’t leave you on “read.”

Nothing pokes at your heart more than seeing “Read 11:15am” when it’s now nearly 3pm. Mom will never read and not respond. In fact, if anything she does the opposite. This woman won’t leave you alone!

13. She knows what you want before you do.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there have been countless times where she did something for you before you even knew you wanted her to do it. She picked you up a tube of mascara because she somehow magically knew you were running low, got you your favorite Starbucks drink on her way home from work, and the list goes on. Moms definitely have super powers.

And Finally…

14.) She’s just a badass!

I'm nothing more than a girl who's managed to hit her emo phase in college instead of middle school. Now I'm just a little too obsessed with writing, music, and tattoos, but hey, at least instead of dying my hair neon green and making chokers I'm dedicated to an organization that empowers women, so I guess I'm doing SOMETHING right ??‍♀️
