At around 9:00 last night, I heard fireworks going off across the street from my dorm. I hadn’t seen any since the fourth of July and I was surprised to hear them at this time of year. People in the hallway were looking out their windows and discussing why they were going off; most people thought that CMU was just really excited about Columbus Day until an RA told us it was for homecoming.

It was a really cool experience, though, because everyone seemed to stop and watch them, even if it was only for a moment. In all the business of classes and activities and work, time just stood still for a bit. The booms and flashes overtook the sky and Snapchat stories.

I can’t wait to find out what other cool experiences await here, I’m so glad to get to be a part of this community where we can all sit and watch the sky together.
