Dana Weinstein: Greek Sing Overall Chair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

Greek Sing is one of CMU’s biggest philanthropy events and one of its most fun! Every house in the Greek community comes together to put on entertaining 13-minute musical performances. Dana Weinstein, the overall Greek Sing chair and coordinator for the event, discusses the excitements, secrets, and favorite parts of this fantastic event.

HC: What is Greek sing? And, what is your favorite part about the event?
Greek Sing is Carnegie Mellon’s largest philanthropy event where the Greek Community comes together and performs 13-minute musicals for the Carnegie Mellon community. Some are shortened versions of movies or Broadway musicals and others are original shows written by the chapters. In addition to putting on these musicals, each chapter competes to raise the most money for the chosen charity. This year, Ben Lee (my co-chair) and I have decided to donate the money we raise to The Children’s Institute.

HC: Why do you believe it is a great event for our community?
It really is an event for the whole Carnegie Mellon Community. Even though it is run by the Greek Community, everyone in the community can participate through attending a chapter’s philanthropy event, placing an ad in the program, or just attending the event. It brings our community together in a creative way to support an amazing cause.

HC: Why did you choose to be an overall greek sing chair?
Greek Sing has always been one of my favorite events and I realized I wanted to be a part of it on a larger scale.  I’ve grown up working in theater and fundraising and Greek Sing was the best culmination of the two.

HC: What, so far, has been the best part?
Getting to work with The Children’s Institute. Its such a great philanthropy to work with and I’m so happy that we chose them this year.

HC: Whatdid you hope to change/improve on this year?
Raise more money!

HC: What was your favorite Greek Sing performance you’ve ever seen?
I have 3 favorites:
Delta Delta Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon’s Sidekicks! from 2007
Delta Gamma and Phi Kappa Theta’s Little Shop of Horrors from 2008
Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s Titanic on Ice from 2010

HC: Any surprises or things you’ve learned that you didn’t expect?
There were a lot of little extra things that I took for granted when I was in the shows and I didn’t realize how much work the chapter’s Greek Sing Chairs put into their shows. The chapters’ Greek Sing Chairs dedicate so much time and effort into putting together these 13-minute shows and this is something I’ve really been able to see as an Overall Chair. After watching them work so hard for the past few months, I’m really excited to see the shows they’ve put together this year.

HC: When is Greek Sing and how can people get tickets?
Greek Sing is April 2, 2011 at 7pm at Soldiers and Sailors.
People can buy tickets at the UC info desk starting March 21st and members of the Greek community will be tabling the week of March 28th to sell tickets.
