If there are two things CMU is notorious for, it’s long hours of studying and that dreaded Pittsburgh weather. No one feels like dressing up for class and putting effort into looking cute—especially when she’s operating off of three hours of sleep and it’s raining outside (yet again). Despite our laziness, we all want to feel good about ourselves, and maybe even impress that guy in calculus class. The secret is easy (and warm, and waterproof!) clothes that show off your personality and make you feel good. Here are some essentials for a perfect CMU wardrobe:

Essential #1: Rain Boots

Pittsburgh is known for its obnoxiously large number of rainy days, and while those shoes may look cute, it’s really not worth sitting through class all day with wet feet. There’s no need to feel like a five-year-old either. Rain boots come in so many cute colors and patterns that they really can make a fashion statement. So buy one (or two or three) pairs and look cute while staying dry.

Essential #2: Layering
?It’s 30 degrees when class starts at 8 am and 60 degrees at 4 pm when class is over, making layering essential (unless you want to change 3 times a day). Layering can also add style and an element of interest to any outfit. For example, layer a cardigan over a cute top or wear a more interesting top over a solid one (also adding warmth).

Essential #3: Good Snow Boots
Those boots you love may be stylish, but chances are they aren’t very warm and waterproof. In Pittsburgh, warm, waterproof boots are essential. This is something you cannot argue with. I tried to argue with this idea for many years and only ended up with wet socks and a miserable day. UGGs just don’t cut it. Look for boots with a rubber bottom. There are some cute snow boots out there, and you certainly won’t regret wearing them when everyone else has wet feet and you’re warm and toasty. Some brands to check out: Sorel, Kamik, North Face (Hint: If they make boots or jackets for skiing, they probably know how to keep your feet warm.).

Essential #4:Cute Warm Jackets
This one is pretty obvious. The motorcycle jacket is nice, but try to find one with a (faux) fur lining. A peacoat is always good and works for dressy occasions. The key is to buy a jacket with a good, warm lining. Don’t be afraid to buy a really warm coat. You won’t regret it on those cold January days.

Essential #5:Adorable Cold Weather Accessories
Also fairly obvious, gloves, scarves, and hats are your best friend in Pittsburgh in the winter. With so many fashionable options, who wouldn’t want to wear them anyway?

I am a junior Materials Science and Engineering mjaor at Carnegie Mellon University, and I am also minoring in Professional Writing and Business. I am a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.  I love TV and trying out new beauty products.  I follow E! on Twitter so that I can stay up-to-date on celebrity news.  I'm royal-obsessed, and I love Kate Middleton's style.  I'm kind of a Sephora addict, and I could easily spend hours there.  I also spend way too much time on Pinterest.  Finally, I love hockey and all Pittsburgh sports.
Julianne Grauel is a sophomore Professional Writing major at Carnegie Mellon University and is originally from the California Bay Area. At Carnegie Mellon she is a peer tutor for writing and an active sister in her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. This past summer, she interned at Gentry Magazine and hopes to work for a magazine after college. Julianne loves football, sushi, sunshine, and dance parties. She probably consumes far too much Red Mango froyo and can’t get enough of Project Runway. In her free time she likes to travel, watch sports center, take spinning classes and, most of all, shop.
