Campus Celebrity: Carrie Weintraub ‘15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

Carrie Weintraub, a senior Information Systems major, is this year’s Overall Carnival Chair, and has been extremely passionate about Carnival since her freshman year at CMU. In addition, Carrie has had many reputable internships throughout the past four years, and ambitious goals for the future. Although it is her senior year, she is putting in lots of hard work to give back to the campus community and leaving her mark here at CMU before she graduates.

What do you love about Carnival?

I love how it unifies the campus community. It is the event with the most participation and 15,000 people from all over Pittsburgh attend. Every student looks forward to the weekend whether it is for Booth, Buggy, the concert or just to have fun with friends.

How did you get involved with Carnival?

My first Carnival experience was building Booth with my sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, my freshman year. I fell in love with the build process and really enjoyed being on Midway. I also really loved that feeling of fulfillment that came with watching something I built with my bare hands be enjoyed by the whole community.

I felt very similarly after my sophomore year and decided that I wanted to get more involved with the organizing of Carnival so I joined Spring Carnival Committee my junior year as the Administrative Coordinator for Booth Committee. I became close with a lot of people on committee and really enjoyed the planning leading up to Carnival and Build Week from the “other side” so I decided to run for the Overall Chair and the rest is history!

What are your goals for this next Carnival?

I have a few goals that I split into “Organization goals” (how SCC interacts with the campus community) and “Event goals” (changes to the actual Carnival weekend). In terms of Organization goals, I want SCC to be more visible to organizations and, especially during Build Week, to have many familiar faces on Midway to help Booth orgs. In terms of Event goals, we really want Carnival to be more of a cohesive weekend rather than a lot of separate events. I want people to come to Midway and to have a reason to stay and to have fun. We have some big changes we are planning so stay tuned!

Where are some places you have worked?

This past summer, I interned with Apple as a Technical Project Manager intern in their Information Systems & Technology division. The summer before that, I interned with Xerox in their Xerox Information Management division as a Portfolio Management intern for their Managed Print Services Business. After my Freshman year, I interned for Legg Mason Global Asset Management as a Development intern in their IT department.

On campus, I work at the Engineering and Science Library and have done that since first semester Freshman year.

Tell me about some of your most rewarding and memorable work experiences.

At the end of my last 2 internships, I have had major presentations to give to higher-ups about what I had done over the course of the internship. Both of these have bene rewarding since they have allowed me to step back and realize exactly how much I had done and what I had learned over the 10 or so weeks I had been at the company.

What are your plans after you graduate, and what are your future professional goals?

I will be going back to Apple for their IT Development Program which is a 2-year rotational program around IS&T.  I am really excited! I want to be a Project Manager and eventually earn my MBA to be some sort of upper-management at a large company. Big dreams, I know!
